CVX 18 Hesitation in gear
« on: August 15, 2012, 02:04:54 PM »
Boat seems to start fine and runs well across the lake. But when going slow (idle speed) and wanting to take off is hesitates then takes off. It acts like it is getting too much fuel. I never had this problem before. It developed after I was out on the river last and my distributor wasn't tight and ended up getting out of time. I re-timed it and now I have this hesitation. It only does it in the water in gear. If i put it in gear and give it gas is hesitates and chugs a little then off like a rocket. I have the 4 barrel Holly double pumper. I just took out the Power Valve it seems to be fine but I am going to replace it. Any ideas on what size power valve to use. It has a 6.5 in there now. Any other ideas what it could be.
I think this has become an addiction.

The accelerator pump is what comes to mind for me too. Otherwise, maybe try adjusting the timing a few degrees both directions and see if that makes a difference. Does it do it when both cold and warm?

Acc. pump seems to be working fine i get a good squirt of fuel and I played with the timing out on the lake last Friday and didn't seem to make a difference. Hot / cold not really a difference seems maybe a little better hot.
I think this has become an addiction.

picked up a carb kit so I will change out the Accelerator pump and power valve. Hope it is one of those. Unless someone else has any ideas.

Try adjusting the accelerator pump so it puts out a little more fuel. Sounds to me like there isn't enough fuel. You need a lot of fuel before you will over-fuel a motor as large as yours to get it to chug on acelleraton.

I would check the advance mechanism in the distributor to make sure it's not hanging up a bit when you mash the throttle. I've seen them bind up and then slowly advance. The mechanism/flyweights need to react quickly or else there will be a hesitation.

Kert It seems to me like it is getting too much fuel. If it is lean don't you usually get a back fire and popping? I am getting none of the just bogging and no power until rpms pick up then goes fine.

Rich this motor is only supposed to have about 10- 20 hrs on it not sure if you know the story of where it came from or not. Do you think it is still a possibility. If so how do I go about checking them The distributor is a HEI set up. Not sure if you remember the pics from when I was fixing the shift interrupter. I got that working good as well so thanks for the info on that problem.
