If I ever decided to put a new motor in Goldie, you're the only one I'd trust to do it right Red.  Your knowledge is beyond reproach in my book.

I've ridden in the boats you've built...and oh boy can you build a motor!

Break In period is something I've always heard of from anyone that knew what they were doing when building / rebuilding an engine.  I remember when outboard companies stated to run double oil for the break in period. I have a friend that builds engines for boats, street/strip and all out racing. He will not warranty an engine that was not treated to the break in period. He builds probably 50 engines a year. Anything from a mild 350 to his latest, a 427 with twin turbos pushing over a 1000 hp.

Here's a little something I found. Maybe these people just don't understand engines and we should just run the piss out of them right from the first turn of the key.

MARINE ENGINES BREAK-IN PROCEDURES

“Break-In” Procedures for 4-cycle MerCruiser Engines

IMPORTANT: The first 20-hours of operation will have a dramatic affect relative to overall engine performance and expected engine life. Proper break-in practices reduce the potential for excessive oil consumption. It also helps to achieve better engine performance levels for a longer period of time.

 

FIRST 20-HOURS:

1.      Do NOT operate the engine below 1500 rpm for extended periods of time. Shift into gear as soon as possible after starting the engine. Advance the throttle above 1500 rpm if conditions permit safe operation.

2.      Do NOT operate at one continuous speed for extended periods of time. Vary the throttle position every ten to fifteen minutes.

3.      Do NOT exceed ¾ throttle during the first 10 hours of operation. During the next 10 hours you may occasionally operate at full throttle for no more than 5-minutes at a time.

4.      Do NOT operate at full throttle until the engine reaches normal operating temperatures.

5.      Avoid full throttle acceleration from an IDLE speed.

 

AFTER FIRST 20-HOURS:

To help extend the engine life for a remanufactured MerCruiser engine, consider the following recommendations.

1.       Install and maintain the correct propeller for the application. Make sure the prop allows the engine to operate at (or near) the top of its specified Wide-Open-Throttle rpm range. Refer to the Owner’s Manual, or consult with your marine dealer to determine the correct prop for the application.

2.       Refrain from extended periods of Wide-Open-Throttle. We recommend cruising at ¾ throttle or below for longer term operation.

3.       Change the oil and filter regularly. Refer to Specifications and Maintenance section of the MerCruiser Owners Guide for recommendations

Mark bought the new motor from a fellow here in Okc, the machine shop I use built it, when Mark brought his boat here, we pulled his motor, stripped it down and put his intake, carb, and stuff over on the new motor, got it back in the boat last night.

Red is there a reason that you made the transom so thick or did you just use thinner layers. Mine is just two 3/4 in ply with glass in between.

the transom come's out 2 1/4 thick with the 2 3/4 and 1 1/2 and about 1/4 for glass and the boat shell.
thats the way the boats came out, but I think some places thick is good.
I'm not sure the transom assy's for the MR's have the same length studs as in the Alpha's ?
but I use the Alpha dirves, mostly, and the lower studs are just a little longer than 3 1/4" and the upper studs are about 4" so there is enough room left on the studs to get a full nut of threads, and just a little more thru the inner plate.  Don't take this for gospel, I haven't gone out and measured one today, just off the top of my head now, but it seems I remember having to change the top studs in an MR series gimbal housing I put on Red's Gold when I sold it ?  I don't think 1/4" makes any difference to the coupler and drive splines as long as it's line up properly.

Yep, the epoxy coating on the outside of the tank, and in the belly of the hull has been curing a couple days, will be installing it today, I've pressure tested it, weighed it, 62 pounds, the original aluminum tank weighed 37 pounds, but the weight being in the belly of the boat now, rather than way up in the bow, will produce a quieter, smoother ride, and more trim control.  The original tank is 36 gallons, the new tank figures out about 47 gallons.
My sitebuilder has been down a few days, ever since Yahoo made some up-grades, so I've not been able to get any up-dates on the build page, hopefully I can get it back up and running tonite, I Hate it when they come up with something new, it's always a problem for me.

it's a mint green actually, the camara makes it look white,  I'm not going to shoot the clear gel over it, it buffed out pretty good as it is, single stage urethane.  Gary came down from St Louis to look at it and he likes it just as it is. I set topside down on the hull, installed the tops and winglets so he could see what his new boat looks like, he was impressed.  He brought his motor and drive, we pulled the pan, checked it out, done a little work on it, installed a new thunderbolt ignition and fired that baby up, ran it at speed for about 25 minutes to break in the new "flat tappet" cam and lifter set, it proved to be a runner.

Mark showed up with his CVX 20, then Barb, and we pulled the motor out of Marks boat, I Liked this deal ... they done all the work and I just pull the chain on the hoist :)


the engine sounds really, really good!! I want one in my cv16.....hope I can make an outboard sound like that, once I can afford to buy one lol

wow ... I have been lazy with updates, I'll get some more pic's up in a couple days.
Making a couple more mods in the bilge, for the battery, tilt/trim pump and the blowers, then it's ready for the seats carpet and a lake test, be a couple more weeks.

Hey there. I just ran across this post searching for aero commander parts. I currently have serial number 157 N2657B and it's located in Collinsville, ok. The engines have been overhauled but it has been grounded since 2000 due to the hartzell prop AD. This was the first airplane I ever got to ride in and now I own it and am searching for propellers to get it back in the air.
So Bob Hoover flew this exact airplane or just did testing on one similar? I would love to hear some history on this airplane. I know this isn't an airplane forum, and I apologize but this is very cool to see any information about this plane.
