Transom assembly sealant
« on: May 04, 2013, 09:07:56 PM »
I put my first transom assembly on today, before I put the engine in tomorrow I want to make sure it's sealed up correctly.  Any suggestions?

That is a good question. What do you do other than the gasket? I was thinking of adding a bead of 5200 around the exterior. Also is there a touque spec that should be used to properly compress the gasket.?

Just the gasket is needed between the transom shield and boat. I use contact cement to install the O-ring style gasket into the groove on the inner face of the transom assembly, then a little 3M spray adhesive on the transom itself. When I install the inner mounting plate I tighten the bolts/nuts in steps to draw the assembly together evenly until it is tight up against the boat.

What about the ones like mine with the full gasket? Any other procedure?

Just clean flat mounting surfaces should be all that is needed for the flat gasket.

the bottom two bolts that have the anodes on them should have a square holed rubber gasket around them, and the are often split when they are removed, if thats so, I use a dab of mega black on them.
Did you replace the shift cable boot ?

Red, I just have them loosely bolted in right now. I've lightly sanded and cleaned the transom where it'll mount up.  So Rich, you put someting in to keep the gasket in place? What does the spray adheisive do?

I just put new anodes on in august the rubbers looked good but I will check again, and the shift boot was replaced 2 years ago , but I will take a look at all my bellows again to make sure they are in good shape.

all the bolts are inside the gasket seal, but the bottom two are the only one's that are put in from the outside, so a good seal is a must on them, and they should be installed dry, the only time I use sealant on them is if they are split some, and then I only snug them up, tighten them up the next day.  If the washers are dry and clean, they will compress to make a good seal, but if they are tightened up wet or with sealer on them the rubber will sqeeze out or split.

Contact cement in the groove of the transom assembly to position and hold the O-ring gasket.

Though not required I used the spray adhesive on the transom to give the O-ring gasket something to stick to when the assembly is squeezed up tight to the boat. This way if there's ever any shrinkage of the gasket it wont pull away from the transom allowing any seepage of water.

I did this per Rich's advice... works great!  I used rubber cement,  clamped it down overnight and it stayed in place.

Hey Brandon, looks like 23 ft-lbs is what I was finding for torque.  That seemed about right, got it all sealed up and the Y pipe on.  Didn't get the engine in today, when I got the engine up high enough there wasn't enough chain to swing it into the boat.  Back to the drawing board and I'll try something else tomorrow.

Shaun

Little bit taller trailer than when we removed it if you are using the same hoist.

We squeak everything out of it when we removed it.

did you try jacking up the front of it as high as you could to get the back of the boat down?

Too late, I just snugged mine by hand, I made it so I could not bear down on it by using a deep well socket and a 8 inch extension. Just used a pattern starting from the bottom and working my way up. It pulled the gasket up quite nicely.

The advice I got from Rich was to come back in a day and re-torque it as it will compress some over night, so you want to recheck them in.
