Not sure how to do the repair any better.  Maybe a matching panel inside?  Or maybe cut the old part out now near the seam?  Looks perfectly functional to me.

We used spray adhesive, helps to keep the patches in place for sewing and also keeps the tattered parts from flopping around. That kinda eliminated the ability to trim close to seams (but that probably would have looked better). Striving for functional, not beautiful. Lol
