Rathbun Readiness - Iowa CV-23
« on: June 02, 2013, 03:03:09 PM »
"Was going through my pre-Rathbun checklist & just learned I've got no power to bilge and blower.  I checked fuses & they're all good, & everything else works (lights, dash, nav).   So, trying to troubleshoot the problem I noticed this wire that runs to the bilge pump wasn't connected to anything

A portion of it was smashed so I cut off the damaged portion, although the end didn't look like it was ever connected to anything.

I pulled the fuse box off & everything seems to be connected.

So, I'm not sure if this wire could be the culprit or not - ifso, when I winterized I wonder if I could I have accidentally pulled it from the power trim electrical bracket pictured when I was fumbling around the manifolds??

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated - unfortunately all I know is that the bilge pump and blower are important - but no clue on how they are supposed to be wired...to complicate matters I've been told "Sparkly" isn't wired correctly.....much like it's owner  :-/

I can call my locale boat mechanic tomorrow to see if he can look at it before Friday, but if not I'd really like to get it figured out before Rathbun (bugged you guys enough last year w/ boat trouble)

Thanks,

Erik"

Erik, is that wire off your trim pump?
Just a thought, my bilge and blower are on the same switch on opposite sides and it seems to me that the only thing common to that switch is ground.  Neither the bilge or blower should be wired behind the ignition, so that could have been going to ground if it is the culprit.  If you can't figure it out we'll get it fixed at Rathbun.  I keep my multimeter in the truck all the time.

Thanks for weighing in - I touched the wire to the battery ground & no bilge or blower.

I will have my wiring kit with me also. I still need to wire Phoenix's  blower on the correct side of ign. Since Phoenix now has a switch with an acc. post I need to remove it from the fuse box.

In the second pic the red wire that's hanging out in the air should be connected to a fuse and then to the brass strip that jumps across the two trim solenoids. This is where power to your trim buttons up front come from. Without that connection your trim will not operate.

thanks for noticing that - the trim does work, but has a "unique" set up - the switch on the throttle only lowers it, and the switch on the side of the throttle (what the handle is connected to) only raises it....maybe if I wire it like you mention it would actually work properly - thanks again

If your trim is working then it must be getting power on the red wire from another source. If your thumb button only lowers the trim but doesn't raise it then your trim limit wires or sensor on the drive are kaput. You can bypass the trim limit so the thumb button will operate as it should. Near your trim pump you should have a dual blue wire and a purple wire connected to a pair of black wires. The black wires go to the trim limit sensor on the drive. Disconnect the blue and purple wires from the black wires and connect the blue and purple wires to each other, this will bypass the trim limit function.

thank Rich - I'll try that right after Rathbun.....it's been like that for 12 years so I'm scared I'll mess it up changing it to how it's supposed to go  :)
