Spark plugs - again!
« on: September 09, 2013, 04:38:15 AM »
I had been running the regular styly NGK's in the Evinrude, but decided to try a set of "surface gap" performance plugs.  (I've run the surface gap plugs in all my other motors, just hadn't changed this one over yet.)  The motor picked up a skip at idle, definitely wasn't hitting on all four.  Once you hit the throttle the miss went away and she perked right up, but NOT what I was looking for.  Changed back to a fresh set of standard style NGK plugs yesterday, all is well again in Johnny-rude land.   ;D

Maybe so Gregg, it happens!  I was wondering if I might have a weak power pack, I've already replaced one side right after I bought the motor.  The surface gap plug (BUZ8H) looks to have a much wider gap to jump than the standard plug (BZ7HS-10).  At almost $8 each for the surface gap, I'll stick with the "tried and true" standard plugs thank you!  LOL

If it works ... Don't change it !
Ya ... could be a weak link in your system ...
Don't think mine were as bad money wise ... but close !
Thought they were about $6 each ...

i am running surface gap plugs in my 1973 Johnson 115 because it has an unexplained clearance issue (piston touches electrode on standard plug)
started the season out with some NGK plugs, switched to L78V that i got from Jerry.
Mine is fussy at idle/low RPM but runs great at speed.

Have you tried running standard gap plugs using a spacer washer or two to solve your space issue and possibly the idle issue as well?

Before I went to the surface gap plugs, I had a set of standard plugs with the washers doubled up and that seemed to solve the problem.
I looked at indexing rings at Summit racing but never got around to ordering any.
