Fall Wine Tour
« on: October 06, 2013, 06:42:10 PM »
I went for a drive through the Finger Lakes Wine Country and look what followed me home.
There was no stopping to taste the wine and there are no photos of the gorgeous scenery however there is another Carlson sitting in the driveway.
Shawn has it right  "I think this has become an addiction".

Another OMC Stringer drive ...
If you want any components I'll be stripping them out of my project boat. I've got a complete drive, but it's connected to a 3.0 liter 4 cylinder engine. What engine is in your boat?

You want a 3.0 liter to take it's place? Complete package, everything is included. Or are you going to convert it to a Mercruiser? That's my plan the "the project boat".

John only thing better than 1 CVX18 sitting in the driveway, is 2 CVX18s sitting in the driveway! Especially next to a big enclosed trailer!.....LOL  ;D

Is that a parts boat for your other one or do you plan to bring it back from the dead?

From what I here about Stringer drives it might be a good idea to change to  a mercruiser. I just don't know what's involved with glassing in the transom. Another option is a complete 350 OMC engine /drive that i found on CL for 600.00. I have plenty of time to look 'cause I'd like to finish the '80 CVX that's in the garage.

I bought it as a parts boat but the hull looks in good enough shape to keep it as a resto.  It has the usual rot in the transom, the floor is real soft and I suspect the stringers  are soft also.

The trailer is where I hide the snowsleds.

That's what I figured about the trailer.

I have a low profile engine cover like what is on your '80 in that same silver metalflake. I like the raised/bulged engine covers better so depending what you end up doing with the boat if you want a lower profile engine cover keep me in mind, I'll trade you.

Hey John, you are going to use it as a parts boat? I know I might be jumping the gun here, but if you are not going to use the interior I would be interested in one of the swivle seats to tear down for a pattern to make new ones for my CVZ.

That was the one that was on eBay, you got a very good deal on that. I was thinking of that one myself but passed because of the OMC drive. Hope it was as solid as he said it was.

When I dig into mine I'll document the conversion. Currently the boat's transom is about 1 1/4ths inches thick for the OMC . It doesn't need to be thick because the engine or drive isn't attached to it, therefore is not relied upon for support. The transom will have to be rebuilt to a total thickness of 2 inches, the hole in the outer skin glassed flush with the surrounding transom and a new hole cut for the Mercruiser transom assembly. Engine mounts will need to be built into the stringers and position adjusted accordingly for the intended engine.

Brandon, not having the original seats in the '80 CVX and using the seats as a pattern was one of reasons for getting this boat. I will be happy to make up and send you some patterns. It may take a little time to get to them if you don't mind.

Rich it is quite solid. The thing I like most is that it's quite complete. For example, all the hinges for the engine cover and swimpad are there and in good shape. All the attachment points for the rear seat are present. A lot of the details are original the boat hasn't been modified, except for the engine cover and ski tow.The reassembly of the '80 will be easier by having a solid example to compare with.

Just today I saw a CVX 16 project on CL just a few miles from my house and was tempted to go look at it.

That may be an unmodified engine cover since it was for a stringer drive. Kip knows for sure unless you mean it has been modified in some other way besides the hump. In case you don't know, that's how stringer drives "trimmed". By raising and lowering the motor on screws. Pretty odd.

I posted  a few months back about an odd looking engine cover on a CVX I found out in California. The guy said the engine cover was original but that didn't match up with the year based on when the raised engine cover came into play. The reply I got back was that the OMC powered CVX's had that engine cover because the low profile wouldn't work.  I had saved that auction, went back and looked at it because he had some good pics in there. I am thinking that is the original engine cover without question.

I will put myself second in line if you do decide to get rid of that and would also offer my low profile in trade (plus a little cash). Some days I like the low one and others I like the raised. Maybe I will have both.

Rich , thanks for the info. It makes sense that you need a taller cover with the OMC because  you lift the engine to trim the drive. I'll keep you guys in mind when I decide on what to do with the cover.

John here is the marketing literautre for an '86 CVX18, notice the engine cover. They standardized on that cover around '85. You will not find a CVX18 or CVZ18 with a OMC stringer drive that has an engine cover like you '80.  Glastron Carlson also used another style engine cover for the stringer drive models but it is not as common as the one on the boat you have.
