The Lost Has Been Found
« on: October 19, 2013, 07:40:03 PM »
As many of you have probably seen in the for sale wanted that Amber and I lost the Bimini Top to Phoenix Rising last Sunday. After posting a couple Craigslist Ads I got an email from a person in York, NE saying he has my Bimini Top. So this evening I made the trip over to York and met this person, and low and behold he had my Bimini Top. So loaded it up and headed for home.

Now on to the Road Rash.
I do have one minor bend in the frame to straighten out(nothing the press out at work can't fix). The worst damage to the top is a couple rubbed spots about the size of a pin head and a scraped up snap. The storage boot on the other hand took the brunt of meeting the pavement at 75mph. It has quite a few holes wore through it and some grass stains. It is still usable but we are probably going to look into getting the boot repaired.

Glad you were able to get it back. The chances that someone was kind enough to pick it up AND keeping an eye out on CL for the owner are somewhat slim so it sounds like these are some real good people.

Amazing that thing doesn't look like a pretzel after taking flight at 75 mph.   A good friend of mine lost a titanium road bike of the back of his SUV earlier this summer. It did not have the same outcome as your top. $4000 bike and nothing could be saved.

Yep it is kind of an interesting story on the top's happy ending. The guy I picked it up from got it from his brother who works for the Nebraska Department of Roads. His brother found it Monday morning in the north ditch of I-80 between the exits of Utica, NE and York, NE while out doing his job. So he picks it up and calls the guy I picked it up from who has been looking for a Bimini top for his smoker craft fishing boat. So he tells his brother to just stop by after work and put it in his garage and he would look at it later. Well his brother gets there and drops it off and calls the guy I got it from and tells him its too narrow for his boat, and he just decided to keep it to see what he could make out of it in the spring. Then as the story goes he sees my ad on craigslist and now its back home!

Brandon glad you were able to get it back.

CL sometimes there are host people out there.

Question: what caused it to depart from the boat in the first place?

I forgot to flip it forward into the passenger compartment so it was sitting on the stern of the boat above the engine cover. I presume the force of the air flow at 75 mph caused it to vibrate and bounce enough to cause the mounting screws to work their way out of the slides.

I had seat the back seat cushion blow out of an 87 SeaRay that I previously owned while going down the highway.   If you think about all of the stuff you see in the ditch along the highway you know it had to come from somewhere....lawn chairs, grills, coolers.    This is why I stay pretty far back from trucks and trailers on the highway no matter how secure they seem because you never know when something is coming loose - I know I have had my fair share.

Purty cool that you got it back.

If'n I member right those were made outa Hartz "Sea Cover" material.

I might have enough to make ya a new boot, but I know I ain't got enough for a new top.

Not sure they make the stuff anymore.
