Will someone please tell me how to remove the propeller on my 175 Evinrude .Im a little guy and tried to hold the prop & turn the ratchet and that sure dont work . In reading up it says never put a 4x4 between the prop and motor, that was my next idea . I can see why being it's aluminum, but then we are forced to do alot wen arent suppose to . Any help & info appreciated

I don't see why you can't put piece of a 2x4 between the prop and cav plate, I do it all the time and I work at an Evinrude dealer.

Never had an issue using a 2x4 from the skeg to the prop to remove a prop nut. Getting a prop off the splines that has not been off in years is sometimes tricky.  For that I have use a 3 jaw puller with modified hooks.  Good luck.

UPDATE  175 Evinrude Glastron    I bought a broken boat . I paid 1200 for a beautiful boat , well taken care of . He cranked the boat and it run good , I still runs good , but we never put it in gear , When you try to push the throttle forward, It sounds like a car transmissiom with a bad clutch, grinds & cruntches to beat the band, It would finally go in gear after all the grindering , but jumps for a spell and smoothed out , and run good , the fishing trip was cut short, I did'nt want to ruin it more than it was .
If any of you have had this problem please give me some imput in diffiiculty to repair, or estimate if some of you are a dealer, or friends with one .
PS , Spent about an hour on the bank, my wife caught a bream , i caught a childs swim mask . At least i got a good picture of my catch

It could just need a shift cable adjustment at the engine. Does it go into reverse ok, and if so does it seem like it goes too soon? If that's the case the cable trunnion may need a little adjustment to favor more movement into forward. Sometimes an old shift cable that's binding up may cause the problem. Worse case is a problem inside the gearcase of the engine, something a shop should check out.

Thanks Rich , It does go into the reverse fine . It dont seem to be too soon . The thumb thing that you pull up is broken to unlock neutral , but there is enough to pull , just makes for a sore thumb . If it goes into reverse does that rule out the clutch dog gears ? Any more advice appreciated .

Not necessarily because a clutch dog can engage in one direction but not the other. One side of the clutch dog could be worn more than the other, usually the side that gets the most usage. The way the clutch works is it is keyed to and slides on the prop shaft between the forward and reverse gears which are always spinning, even in neutral. Whichever gear the clutch slides and locks into that's the direction you're going to go.

An improperly set up shift rod can also cause this problem so if someone had the gearcase off the engine and played with the height adjustment of the rod that can screw up its ability to shift correctly.

Oh, I mentioned that to find out if it is engaging into reverse too soon before the control handle reaches the detent position where throttle takes over. If that were the case I would first try adjusting the cable adjuster on the engine to "centralize" the neutral point so both forward and reverse engage with the same amount of movement of the control handle in either direction from center.
