Starter question
« on: July 22, 2015, 09:28:19 AM »
I am pulling the 305 out of the SSV and a year or so ago, I attempted to hot wire it and see if it would run, but no go. After pulling the starter and see it was all rusted, I got it to move but now very freely.
In any case, I thought I would take the starter off the V175 since that still has its original 1971 stater in it and buy a new one for that and use the old one for the 305. Since the V175 V8 is a mixture of different year parts, I figured I'd just look for another SBC starter with the same amount of teeth. Easier said than done. It has 9 teeth. I believe its a 168 tooth flywheel but have not confirmed. Researching the old part number (1108848) says it went obsolete and was replaced by another starter that has 11 teeth. Does that make sense that it would work?
The old one has the staggered bolt pattern, which is common but I'm concerned about them messing correctly.
Thoughts?

Hard to believe a tiny PM electric motor would turn over a BBC, but they say it will.  Electric motors have come a long way over the years, just look at the RC and vac cleaner industries.  Let us know how it works for ya.
