CV-16ss and I want
« on: May 13, 2016, 08:31:24 AM »
Hey,

So recently nearby on craigslist a CV 16ss popped up, it's gold and white a 1973 I believe, even though the ad says 74'. As the CV-16ss is my favorite Glastron I really want it and don't want to miss a good oppurtunity. The owners don't have much interest in the boat and want it gone, they put it up for $1500 and I don't know a whole lot about pricing on these and am looking for some estimates on what it's worth. The boat is in decent shape, the finish is oxidized in spots but I don't think it's bad, it's pretty original from what I can see in the single picture and the engine and drive are too. Windshield is a little funky not sure if it's been removed and pushed forward but the frame doesn't reach back to the "bumps" towards the back as they normally do, like an older CV-16 windshield. The boat has no cover as far as I know and the upholstery is pretty rough. The engine developed trouble a couple years back and has been on the trailer since and haven't had the time to figure out what was wrong, not sure what the storage situation was over those two years and don't know if the floor is good. How much should this fetch do you think? I really want this boat and would like to know a little more before looking at it and purchasing it, sorry if I don't have a lot of info, I'm just saying what I've been told and what I see. Thank you for your time!

Isaiah

So sounds like:
-Gel is OK
-Needs interior reupholstered
-Possibly needs windshield but hopefully just the side rails. I've seen plenty of people take these off to get in and out of boat easier. Not my choice though!!
-MIGHT need a engine rebuild (worse case)

Is it a Mercruiser or volvo drive? Mercruiser is a little more desirable.
Check floor and transom for soft spots and rot (pretty common).

I'd say, $1500 would be fair IF engine/drive, floor, and transom all checked out.

These are not an uncommon boat and in that condition is pretty is easy to find.

I can tell you I paid $3500 for mine in near mint original condition 10 years ago but I have only seen a few others pop up in this condition.

But seriously... Dibs ;D I really want this thing.

The windshield is there and so are the aluminum side rails just pushed forward a bit it seems. It is a Volvo, and by checked out do you mean functional because the engine is not working or in one piece (Head was removed) right now, is this still a fair price? Sorry for any misunderstanding on my part. Thank you.

The wind shield is off a CV16 outboard, note bottom rubber strip and corner alm. pieces.
Didn't know the arm's were shorter, but looks like they were ...

Hard to say worth with a bad motor and untested out drive.
Kind of a gamble at $1500.

Thank you for confirming my suspicions! Could that be made looking more original with new aluminum frames/arms and a lower profile rubber strip under the windshield? Wonder how that got on there though. Anyway I get ahead of myself, would bartering for a lower price be sensible considering it's shape?

Good eye Gregg! I think you nailed it.

Looks like a 73.

If it were me, and I couldn't hear the motor run before buying, I'd assume it's toast. Just to cover myself. Seen a lot of cracked blocks!!

The floor and transom are the big ones though. And if the interior is in rough shape it means it's done a lot of sitting out without a cover and with the nature of these boats I wouldn't be surprised if it needs a transom and floor too because of that.

Thank you for your responses, you answered a lot of questions. I will definitely pay close attention to all the things mention when/if I go take a look at it.

CV16SS's and later models O/B's had a channel that the bottom alm. wind shield trim bar sat in.
Early CV16 O/B's did not have the channel in deck, also holes would not line up for the different styles ...

Not sure about the I/O's, but the design of floor, stringer and transom on O/B wasn't great,  water was trapped and splashed around on unsealed wood.  Forty years latter ... WOOD ROT !

With the bad motor ... could start getting pretty expensive.

Thank you, I am asking for more information on the things discussed from the owner now. Thanks for the info on the windshield, it's an interesting case. Definitely need to be careful with buying boats that need some work as you said the price can really start to add up.

Update* if anyone cares I don't blame you if you don't. This isn't really a hot topic :P But the owner says the drive is good as of when the boat last ran in 2014 and believes the timing belt slipped. She (the owner) told me she just went out and jumped on the floor, not a bad test! I'll check a little closer if I go look at it. Thanks for all the help.

Bring a screwdriver and poke the transom on the inside of the boat around the engine.

Bring a sharp interment, like a pick and poke around on inside of transom.
Poke around speedo pick up and around transom/motor.
Look for fiberglass separating from wood.
Vinyl for seats and trim will run you about $250, upholsterer will run $1000 or more.
You might be able to find a bad boat with a running motor, but will add to total price ...
New windshield plexi would be $400 or more, maybe few hundred for right alm. rails.
Replacing transom will cost about $500 for materials, labor is free if you can do it yourself, dirty work but not hard.
Hope for the best, but plan for the worst ...

Thank you for the estimates, the upholstery is the scary number. I'm really on the fence whether I could handle taking on this project, but no harm in going and checking it out I guess.

Well, that's just gorgeous. I wish I could drive all the way to Milwaukee and pick it up, but I'm assuming this means I could ask for a lower price :P The owner sure wants it gone at this point and said she really just wants someone who appreciates it, as manipulative as it may be I may be able to use that to my advantage. Or they'll realize I really want it and keep the price where it is...

It's been for sale for at least one month  ...  interior, windshield and motor will get expensive ...
It's not a rare model ...

Very true, thank you for all the estimates and wisdom, initial price is definitely not the ending price with boats. I'll consider this deeply before realizing I should be patient and wait for another to come around :P

I generally look at boats storage conditions as a means to determine what level of project it's likely to be.  If i see a boat outside, no cover, leaves, and torn up interior, you can be nearly assured all the wood is rotten.  Engines and drives should be demonstrated.  Not running or in parts, i consider as requiring rebuild and price accordingly.  How much of the restoration work you can complete yourself is another consideration.  For instance, if you acquire this craft, and need somone to replace floor, transom, interior, and then rebuild the engine and drive will cost in excess of $5k.  If you did all the work yourself you could save plenty.  Examples of finely restored, or unmolested and well cared for originals do exist at reasonable prices.  Going this route can save you money and stress in the long run.  Right now is the worst time of season to find great deals on boats, especially projects.  Not having the ability to inspect the craft, but from what has been described, I would say $1500.00 is a bit much, especially if the head is off.
