I just got this boat and it went about a mile! The 1971 Johnson 85 Hydro electric engine decided to run but said no to engaging in forward or reverse! My question is do I keep the engine or repower with a new one? Does anyone know if this really is a rare boat? It is exactly like the one in the movie Live and let die and it is all original and in exceptional condition. I need to get it running! It wants to go to Treasure Island the weekend of the 18th!

I also have one of the 85 Johnson hydro elec. drives and it's stuck in gear so I can't get it to even crank over unless you jump the starter cyl.   I would like to get going but don't know where to start. Any ideas on this would be great .  Is that the gt150 that was in le center?

Disappointed the lower unit was toast but the engine seems ok. I really want a new or newer Yamaha or merc for it. I don't want to wreck the original feel this boat has... But I don't like paddling either! Is this a rare boat like the club website says? If not I'll repower it with a new one.

I'm not sure if it uses selinoids for shifting but the hydro electric drive has no linkage so I would assume so. Why?

That's cool, I never ran the motor it came off of but it turned over nice and both solo idea had 6.5 ohms resistance so I figured it was probably going to be good, oil looked decent

Yep, it has two solenoids for shifting, and requires special lubricant in the lower.  Use regular lube and they don't last.  Given regular maintenance the hydroshift works good.  Curious how much for the lower?    I have two of them and with care they work fantastic.  Considering using them as twins on my redneck toon.  Or sell them?

Plugneck... Did you say redneck? I like you already! Nothing better than twins on a pontoon... Well I ride in a premier pontoon with trip 300hp Evinrudes at the Miami boat show! But at a selling price of 260k I can't say it was redneck! What I can say is it's always nice to see what I will be riding in twenty years from now when the price comes down! The pontoon was 12' x 36' and did 0-60 in 7 seconds! If you check out Evinrudes Facebook page and see the pontoon its me and my wife in the pic. I'll post if I need a lower unit! Thanks for your response !!!

I think there is a thread on here somewhere about the redneck toon.  We owned a very nice Bennington 2275CC, loved it, but a pain to prep, clean, and store.  Redneck toon(Lowe 200) gets washed when it rains, and blown out with a leaf blower.  Got maybe $1200 in her.  Plans are to make a center toon/transom.  Maybe I/O, maybe twins.  Must be reliable to be on Mo river, so two outboards likely be that.  As for your outboard, the shifting is based upon a hydraulic pump tied the two solenoids that apply pressure to shift forward or the other for reverse.  Water in the fluid or wrong lube is usually their undoing.  Cool thing, if they both lose power the drive locks in forward.  I assume as a means for it to get ya home.  If the powerhead is OK, and you can score a lower unit for $40, then you should be good.  Get the correct oil, and don't be afraid to drain and check for water after a run or two.  No water or loss of fluid and you should be golden.

Thank you all for your responses! I'm looking forward to TI later this summer! A special thanks to Plugcheck for the leaf blower idea. My GT is so small I'm packing my Stihl br650 backpack blower in the boat. If my lower unit fails I'll mount the blower on my wife and turn my GT into a Berkeley Jet! How's that for redneck!
