1989 Glastron 170 Futura
« on: July 20, 2016, 03:10:19 PM »
Hi all... I'm new here and new to the glamorous world of Glastron ownership. I recently purchased a 1989 Glastron 170 Futura, and right off the bat I have a problem. I have a strong smell of fuel emanating from the innards of my hull.  I removed the inspection ports and it appears that my hoses to the fuel tank are in dire need of replacement.  My question is.... does anyone know where I might come by a schematic of sorts for the hose layout for this boat, and can I replace the hoses without having to cut the floor out of my boat?

There are only 3 hoses to the tank and should be easy enough to figure out. There's a 1.5 inch fill hose, a 5/8ths vent hose and a line going from the pickup to the engine. However, if your hoses are that bad make sure the tank itself isn't rotting through prompting a full tank replacement. The floor panel above the tank might be removable.

Futura 170 is outboard powered with inboard tank, correct? Then there should be 3 hoses as Rich said above. I have an 89 Sierra 160 which is the slightly less fancy cousin to your Futura 170 and that's how mine is laid out.

You should be able to replace them by removing the inspection covers and threading in new hose. May have to remove the rear seat backs to get access to the filler neck and possibly vent hose.

Yes... It is an outboard powered/inboard tank configuration. There are three hoses, two larger ones, and the smaller pickup line. I understand the larger "fill" hose... but what is the purpose of the other large hose? Where does that hose lead? Obviously the fill hose leads to the fuel fill port on the outside of the hull, but the other large hose has me confused.

Most tank have fuel filler, fuel out (to motor) and breather (attached to side of hull above tank)

Thanks, Hyper...

So, the larger hose in the fore inspection port next to the fuel gauge sending unit is likely the breather hose?

Most likely ... Yes.
Air has to get in & out as you fuel up and use fuel while running motor.
Hose should go to a through hull fitting.

BirdmanMN: yes, that's the vent hose. Next to the sending unit and accessible via the fore inspection port. Mine routes aft under the floor and leads to a breather mounted through the fiberglass in the splash well on the  port side. I'll take some pics when I get home from work.

Fore inspection port
Aft inspection port
This is looking up at an angle at the line going to the motor and the breather. The breather line is directly vertically above the fuel line (which is the newer smaller hose). These fittings pass through the port side of the splash well.
Photo of the breather on the outside of the splash well, directly above the fuel line for the engine.

The tank breather hose! This looks a little past due for replacement. One down, two more to go!
