What’s better on gas... silly question
« on: October 12, 2017, 04:06:30 PM »
I’ve not written much for a while and have a question sorry if it sound a bit silly... but what would be better on gas...
Conditions would be around 30mph cruising...

The contenders:
cvx16 with a 115 merc i6
 intimidator non-jet

I appreciate the intimidator would use loads more flat out :-)

Never seen a jet intimidator, thought they only came in I/O.  The I-6 tower of power is not real frugal with fuel by no means.  All out the v-8 may use more, but mid range cruising it might be closer in fuel consumption rates.  I'm certain the info is out there to make an educated guess, but honestly, if fuel usage/conservation is your goal, the Merc 140 powered 16's are hard to beat.

Dave's 1987 CVX16 with 1985 115 HP Johnson and my 1976 CV16 with 1989 Mariner 115 HP (inline 4 cyl.) get about 4 mpg on a 80 plus mile river run with some no wake zones, mostly 30 to 40 mph cruising and some WOT running.
Jeff's CVX18 with 350 ci. I/O got about 3 1/2 MPG on same run.
My old 1972 V-156 with 1994 60 HP Johnson would get about 8 mpg on same run.

Don't think we'll ever know what our boats would get at just 30 mph all day ...
After all ... They are speed boats ... LOL

yea, none of them really get good millage. I look more at it as a cost of having fun. $40 for a day out on the water is not bad at all. If your looking at getting a new boat just get what you think you'll enjoy more.

The gas we burn with our mid range outboard motors and ordinary horsepower inboards is nothing compared to a couple of Mercury racing inboards producing 500 HP each, capable of boat speeds in the mid 80's.

We went over 100 miles one day this last meet up to Ford dam I believe, plus a couple jaunts to Kini park, Muddy Waters, and several other places.   Not sure total miles over the four days in August, but my total fuel cost was about $300.00.  The point is for me the fuel mileage is not my main worry, as are breakdowns and damage for instance.  I think the long jaunt burned about 23-24 gallons of fuel, so I'm around 4mpg.

What is the merc 140 the smaller v6? Are they much better on fuel than the i6? Fuel is a little worry bearing in mind it’s about $6.50 a gallon here plus oil so probably not for off another third to you guys. Happy to pay what I am for the i6 but if I can get faster (I.e intimidator one day of our German friend ever want to sell it lol) for similar money it’s a no brainier :-)

A Mercruiser 140 is a 181 ci. , inline 4 cyl. GM motor with a 2 barrel carb.
Would think it would get better mileage then a 2 cycle outboard ... Maybe ?

A four-stroke engine will have better fuel economy that a two-stroke of similar horsepower.
