shoebox joint wood and the front bow piece
« on: July 28, 2018, 06:17:07 PM »
so I have finished cutting the deck and I am waiting for more fiberglass supplies so that I can finish it. I thought I would cut the new wood for inside for the shoebox joint while I am waiting and ran into a few things

first I found that the 2 sides are not symmetrically cut and it seems to be because of a 1 inch allowance on one side for the front bow metal piece that helps to hold the rub rail on. I am missing this and wonder where to find one for this V 179 now that I have gotten this far

I also noticed that on the port side the wood was notched and bent and then cut---but on the starboard it is cut cleanly making one more small section instead of being notched and cut. Other than the allowance for the bow piece-  should I follow this design ( does it make a difference) or just cut even pieces for both sides allowing the same distance up front on both sides?

Glastron's were slapped together with what ever wood / glass / decals / trim pieces were on hand at the time … LOL
Nothing on my G/C is symmetrical ...  Like every boat was put together on Friday at 4:00.

I don't think it's a big deal as long as everything fit when your putting her back together.
As long as wood strips aren't rotted .. reuse them .. I did on mine.

There are a few different style and size bow caps, one center screw hole and two hole on sides, plus a few different angles.

As Greg stated, the wood strips are there just to provide a back for the cap and rub rail screws to find purchase.  I like to cut new ones, they can be glued and clamped.  Oftentimes the old holes won't hold the screw proper, and I don't like to chance it.

not really sure what kind of front cap came on this, I do think I will replace the wood as it does seem to have too many holes and is slightly dry rotted and cracked through out---would both caps work or is only one suitable? from my pictures it does seem like the 2 holes on the side bow cap though

I can't say which style is correct for your model, but unless this is a concourse restoration, I doubt it matters.  Look at the old rub rail, it might contain the clue which one was used previously.  One item to consider, the rub rail insert rubber should pass through this area, do not cut it in half.  It will shrink over time, and you don't want a gap to occur here.

Plugcheck I like the idea of gluing it back on ( even though I have a nice pop rivet gun and some marine rivets ) did you use PL glue to do yours? I took off the old wood today and 3 or 4 pieces had cracked on the inside and they just fell apart as they came off! so I'm glad I removed it-I cut the new out of 1/2 inch CDX which is what they used before-I even found a strip with the plywood maker and markings on the old stuff. Did you treat the new wood with resin or anything? I know its above waterline but I would like to know

I used 3/4" cdx cut into strips, then cut reliefs into back side to form the curves.  I used construction adhesive to bond to hull.  As for water proofing, I just "painted" on a mix of resin and acetone to keep from absorbing moisture.

Here is what the proper bow cap looks like. I was missing mine when we purchased the boat but was able to find one on a parts boat.

got the wood glued on, I'm wondering if I can "make" a bow cap out of some material -rubber or metal or even wood? what does the back of it look like---are there any protrusions on the back? or is it like a clamp with some kind of plate or washer?
