Opps wrong side of the bouy
« on: August 30, 2018, 10:15:40 AM »
So in case any one is wondering what happens when you go on the wrong side of a buoy on the river this is it.

We went on a trip last weekend in the big boat. Well everyone else did I made it most of the way. I was driving along seen the buoy and went to the right of it. I was about 30 feet away and happened to look at my depth gauge. It read 6ft I thought thats shallow for the St Croix. Then it went to 5 ft I really thought then. Then all the sudden it went 4,3,2 bang, bang , bang , grind, scrape, bang. Then I went motherXXXX, Son of jidcwi, this continued for about 2 minutes. I was so mad that the buoy was mis-placed by about 30 feet. Luckly I was right in front of a marina so I called them and told them I had hit rock and the boat needed to be hauled out for repairs. They sent a boat out to push me into the travel lift. It wasn't until I was back up top at the helm when I noticed a red buoy to my far right (Red Right Return) I was to the right of the green buoy when this happened, they did not mis-place the buoy after all. Then I just felt dumb because it was only my fault. I had been threw this same area probably 50 different times. With out a problem.

Live and learn always pay attention to the color of the buoys.

So sad. Is the damage more than the props? How much does one of those props cost?

I always forget to know what side of the buoy to go, and then think, am I going or returning, etc. What's the rule again?

So sorry, I feel your pain, albeit not as pricey with mine.  Honestly didn't know there were nav bouys on the Croix, thought only on the Miss.  I kept my iboat app running after my incident because I was told the bouys do get moved around at times.  A couple at the sand pit looked just plain ran over.  I hope the damage is minimal and you can get back to enjoying your boat with a basement.

WOW. No fun, but, that is what insurance is for!

Just curious, where was this? The no-wake in Afton is my guess.

Was it on MN. side of Afton No Wake .. I've clipped that sand bar myself .. No damage but heart rate went up a notch or two ...

Ouch is right, not any fun to loose the use of your boat anytime during the season but it always feels worse late in the season. "Miss Toni" is also laid up for the rest of the season due to the strong storms ( and small funnel cloud ) that came through Red Wing earlier this week. The fly bridge took a direct hit and it made one heck of a mess, nothing left except tangled stainless and scraps of canvas.

Yea, it was a little depressing so I haven't really posted any pictures until now. I have an appointment with the repair facility today. It looks like she will be brought up river to Hudson and then trucked over to Imperial Boat Repair in Hudson best guess estimate says I will have her back by spring. Had some damage to the hull sides from landing on the dock and the fly bridge will be a total overhaul.

Jason, yes that is where it happened. It was on the MN side there are rocks right by the green buoy.

It needs new props, new shafts, new struts, new gutless bearings, new couplers, and repair on the rudder. Not sure if I will be back in the water or not they are having trouble finding new struts.

Tom, sorry to hear about your boat as well I seen a lot of photos from down there.  Not sure if you talked to your insurance company yet, most will depreciated the canvas so be prepared for that.

Just a crazy idea, could you take off the damaged parts, put it back into the slip to enjoy for next 6-8 weeks?  Then when it comes out for winter take it to the shop of your choice?   Sorry, I know little about houseboats except they are cool cabins on the water, can it be trailered? Just might give you some time to save a bit of money?

Interesting. I wouldn’t have guessed it’s that shallow over there. Don’t even remember the channel into the marina. Good to know for next time. Hope you get back on the water soon!
