Honeycomb Floor
« on: September 04, 2018, 03:34:32 PM »
No, not the cereal..

I am thinking of doing the floor in my CV23 with that honeycomb Nida-Core stuff. Looking to cut down on some weight of the beast.

I am looking for any advice or experience with it?

Do I need to lay glass on the bottom before fastening to stringers? Then glass the top?
Do I screw to the stringers or just use cabosil/resin mix?
How far apart can the floor 'joists' be to maintain a rigid floor?
I do plan to fill the floor with foam, other than the center section where the tank sits.

What happens if I drop a water ski, or have a hard heel landing on the floor, is it as forgiving as plywood?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!!

Wondering same thing ..

Don't think you would need anything on bottom, won't rot like wood ..
EDIT … Glass both sides / as per Express Composites  .. EDIT

After a layer of fiberglass and carpet on top of that, should be pretty strong.

Doug C. said he used PVC under seats / anchor points.
Think Chad used aluminum plates.

I planed on using  cabosil / resin mix on floor to hull joint and screwed to stringer.
5200 maybe ?

My plan .. Unless someone says otherwise ..
Also I haven't talked to Express composite yet .. I would go with what they say.

Ah lots of good information in that thread - thank you!

Will have to do some thinking on the seats, might be able to do wood and attach directly to stringers, cut composite floor around and glass over..
Now your carpet raises another question, I am hoping to do a snap in, I wonder how well screws would hold in that stuff? Not like they would have to hold much though..

Back in the day when I worked for the airlines as a mechanic.

The floor boards were made from the honey comb material.

The fasteners going thru or attaching we're done with inserts that were glued in with a 2 part epoxy using a special tip on the end of the tube that would fill the cavity around the https://d2dslulmm3ln9j.cloudfront.net/national-aerospace-standard-nas1832-3-3-insert.jpg

You need to laminate both sides to give it strength. We used biax on the bottom, and a layer of mat on top. PVC board backer for hot foot, seat, fuel tank, and battery mounts. Just under 2' wide. No flex whatsoever. And it's only 3/8".

Okay! Wow a 2' span using 3/8" is pretty impressive!

Are those PVC boards on the underside once installed, so you screw/fasten through the honeycomb into the PVC? Or other way around?

Thanks!

Underneath. Used SS tee nuts to fasten the seat, tank, etc down.

Planning on picking up some honeycomb this week for the boat. I talked to the fellow at Composites Canada and he suggested to use 2 layers of 1708 on both sides of 3/4" Nida Core honeycomb, and that I would need about 5 gal of resin to do the job. (approx 3x 4x7 sheets for the 23CSS floor) To me 2 layers of 1708 on either side sounds pretty heavy duty.
I see Diamond Chad with his CVX 16 used 1.5oz csm. Looks similar to what Shawn did on his CV23 sun pad??

I won't have any areas larger than a 20x20 square that do not have any support. Do you guys think a single layer of 1708 would be adequate on both sides?
I haven't come across any manufacturer suggestions or specs on laminating it either..
any insight would be greatly appreciated!!

With just one layer of csm it gets pretty ridged. Biggest area with out support is over the gas tank. I added in some supports over mine.

How do you plan to screw seats down?
I think this has become an addiction.

Yes I have added supports as well over the tank. I made a support for the seats that are fastened to the stringers that's flush with them. So the honeycomb flooring will sit between the seat base and the support.
