Past newbie but recently active - My Glastron Carlson Story

(1/2) > >>

chipbeal:
Hey Everyone!  My name is Chip Beal and I live in Superior, WI.  I recently got back involved with the CGOAMN site and forums when I got back to rejuvenating my 1979 Glastron Carlson restoration project.

My Glastron/Carlson story starts back in 1963 with a bright red metal-flake 16' Carlson Challenger with a Merc 1000.  My mom and dad were active members of the San Gabriel Valley Boat and Ski Club as were two of my dad's brothers.  They both had flat bottom inboards.  My dad was an outboard fan and bought the hottest on the market at the time which was the Carlson Challenger.   Well my brother and I fell in love with that boat.  We skied all over southern California.  I ski raced behind it from age 11 to 13 at 50 m.p.h.   Wow, what a kick!  We followed boat racing: drag boat racing, SK, SS, and K class circle racing (my Dad's brother is a legend when it comes to Super Stocker (SS) circle boats, winning at least 10 national titles.)  I saw Micky Thompson race his custom Art Carlson designed 22 ft Carlson twin hemi engine boat several times. I was hooked on Carlsons.

My parents moved back to their home state of Oklahoma in 1966.  Of course their was no ski racing in Oklahoma so I took up slalom skiing.  We had the Carlson boat till I was in college when my dad sold it.  (Wish I still had it.)

Fast forward..... I have had a 16ss Baja with a Merc 150 Black Max.  Bought it a little after moving to the Northland (Superior, WI) in 1992.  Love the boat and have kept it in really good shape but wanted a Glastron Carlson for years and just didn't find the one I wanted until about three years ago.  I found one on an Ebay auction (through Boat Angel) and picked it up really worth the money.  I just had to go to Texas to pick her up in February during a really bad snow and ice storm.  But my son and I made the trip and back with a very worthy, solid project boat; a 1979 CVZ 19, yellow and dark gold.   I have attached a "then" photo.

So here I am.  I hope to be much more active and my wife and I plan to attend the August camping/gathering event.

Thanks for reading!!!

P.S.  I am posting on another general post at: http://forum.cgoamn.com/index.php?topic=8034.0  for future progress on the restoration.
