Title: Steering Wheel Help!!!!!
Post by: lookingatstuff on March 02, 2018, 12:06:35 AM
Hey All,

I've got an 73 v186 Swinger. My steering wheel is broken and I can't seem to get it off the hub. I pulled the cap and there is a large carriage bolt that runs all the way down to the bottom of the dash to a nut down there. I loosened this and the steering wheel came off along with a shaft type assembly. I can't see a way to remove the wheel from the shaft assembly. Does anyone know about this? Can I pull it off with a puller? I'm going to try to attach some pictures but haven't had any luck so far.

Thanks,
Cody

I don't have any experience with these but since your wheel is already destroyed, you could use a multi tool or similar to cut radially to the spline. This should loosen it up enough to get it off.

The shaft end that goes into the steering wheel has a square end on it. Try standing it on end and put some penetrant
oil on it. Tap on it from side to side and it should come out.

Put in a vice or between two blocks of wood, with helm shaft hanging down.
Loosen nut and hit it with rubber face hammer.
I removed mine, still in boat by sitting in seat with my knees putting pressures on bottom of wheel and my hand putting pressure on top of wheel and hit shaft with rubber faced hammer.
Popped off after a few good strikes.

Thank you everyone for the advice. I will give it a try when I get home and let everyone know if I'm successful.

Thanks everyone. I ended up having to cut the old wheel off. The hub of the old wheel wuldnt come off until I whacked it with a hammer. But adapter and steering wheel are on their way now. This was the last element I was really stressing about.

Odd looking assembly, but sometimes parts don't come apart as designed.  Either way, it's apart now, so progress forward.
