Hi from Outing MN
« on: December 25, 2018, 11:13:44 AM »
Hello, my name is Rick. Last July I bought my forth Glastron. I've had two CV19SS jets. The first jet was a 1973 with the 455cu engine, gold in color. The second jet was a 1972 with same engine/color which I had from 1985 thru 2005. In between the two jets I had a 1977 silver GT150 with a Johnson 75hp Stinger. Last July I bought a blue 1987 CVX16 with a 1987 120hp Evinrude in excellent condition. I was totally overwhelmed to find a classic Glastron in original condition and could not resist buying it. Even the motor was so clean under the hood that it looked like new. I am the third owner and truly appreciate the previous owners for taking such good care of this classic. I was told that the boat/motor had less than 300 hours on it and I believe it! Even the bottom of the boat is like new. You can tell it has never been beached. A very rare find indeed!
The motor came with a SS 19 pitch prop. The boat runs 55mph @ 6000rpm which is the max rpm for this engine. I am thinking about getting a 21 pitch prop to drop the rpm and increase the speed a bit. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Hi David,
Just thought I would tell you that we lived in Clearwater on Fish Lake for 20 years. I actually bought my CVX16 from a guy in Clear Lake on the Briggs Lake chain. Small world!

Small world indeed.

 I’m just west of Fish, on Long/Crooked for the last 25 years.  I think we would all be surprised at the nice original Glastrons sitting in dry storage for decades about; looks like you found one.

Good group here.

I have a correction concerning the pitch of the prop that came with the boat. It is a 21 pitch which I learned when double checking the spline count. I assumed that the previous owner knew what he was talking about. Anyways, now I am looking at getting a 23 pitch. Looks like there are still new/used OMC props available on eBay. I will probably just go ahead and get one and use the 21 pitch for a spare. I am expecting  400-500 rpm drop which is still within the desired operating range (5500-6000) for the engine. I will let you know how it performs next summer.

Dave P. (David CVX16) has done a lot of prop testing with a CVX16 / 115 HP Johnson.
Do a search for "CVX16 Prop" .. He has a few threads on his testing.
Think he's running a 22P Raker and a 23P SRX for top speed.

I have the same 1987 CVX-16 boat in red, but with a 1985 Johnson crossflow 115 HP. The prop has the smaller hub, yours looks like the larger hub being a looper. My best props are a 22" OMC Raker and a 23" OMC SRX over the hub exhaust. At wide open throttle, RPM's are about 5,400 to 5,500 and GPS speed about 55 to 58 MPH. Check with Jerry Sellner for props. He has some new Rakers and some SRX's. PM me if you want to talk boats. I have seen your boat for sale twice, and was tempted to buy.

Very sharp looking boat David! Are the front seat headrests custom or was that an option back then?
I see you have a photo of the boat I bought. I am curious how long he was trying to sell it and the price he started at?
Thanks for the info on the props. However I pulled the plug on a new OMC SSTII 23P already for $170 including shipping. Hopefully that is a decent price?
I like to go fast when alone (which is most of the time) and when the lake is like glass. WOT / sitting so low to the water makes it feel like 100 mph in this boat, as you well know. The biggest reason for a different prop is to lower the rpm's a bit to help with gas consumption and to worry less of engine failure at 6000 rpm. The VRO system was disconnected so I am mixing 50/1 using premium gas.

If David's red CVX is the one listed on Hyperacmes hull number list as having a hull number ending in G6 87 it is an extremely early 1987 model being built in July of 1986. The seats are the 1986 style, the new upholstery for 1987 might not have been ready in July or Glastron was just using up 1986 inventory.

G6 = July 1986 build date
87 = 1987 model year

Mine is a 1987 as denoted in the serial number. Also my instrument gauges and steering wheel are different than Rick's blue CVX-16. Differences in the interior.

They look nice! I looked at a silver 86' CVX17 with a 140 Johnson up here and it had the headrest seats, but never seen a CVX16 with them before. So all of 86' models, including the CVX16, had them?

Flipping through the Glastron catalog for 1986, appears that the Carlson's had them, and select others.

Are there any tee shirts available through the association, to show our pride of ownership of a classic Glastron?
