1978 Glastron Carlson CVX-20
« on: July 13, 2021, 01:43:40 AM »
Hello all, I’m starting a major restoration project.  Been working on trying to remove the jet bowl outside transom to no avail. Can get a putty knife all around it but still not getting it out. Removing bright work and controls.  Stringers, bulkheads, float boxes and transom all rotten. Any and all wood on the boat is bad. Engine will not turn and dipstick has rust no oil.
A few questions: how did you remove your jet bowl, bilge bulkhead had two holes a few inches from floor, can’t be original, has anyone PU foamed between stringers, what did you use to pull your engine, what’s the best order to do this work?
Gonna be a long journey.  My dad had a very similar boat when I was young. Many wonderful memories.

Welcome to the forum.   From memory of working on a friend's 23 jet, the driveshaft needs to be pulled as the impeller is inside the bell.  There may also be some bolts connecting the pump intake.   I would pull the engine first, we used a stinger crane, but have also used a bobcat with forks with success.   Your 20 sits fairly low compared to a 23, so you should have more flexibility.    Years ago we used a tree and chain hoist.   The CVX-20 jet has gorgeous lines and is a great restoration candidate.   Plenty of threads on here related to rebuilding classic Glastron.   It will be a journey but worth the effort.  Feel free to ask questions, and pics are always welcome.

Never removed one on a JE pump . Check out bolt #40
looks like it bolts to the intake . Would be easier with the motor out.
Most engine lifts wont reach in far enough to reach the center of the motor

Finally got the pump off. Lots of sealant holding it on. Do I need to repair/replace this bell housing? Looks like a u-joint might have come apart at one point.
Next, I will pull the engine and split the hull to repair stringers, bulkheads & transom.

The slot allows access to the grease zerks.  Appears to have a chunk missing from what you said about the u joint failure.    If no stress cracks originate from that location, I'd opt to clean it up with a carbide and move on.   Should be a high quality casting that you could weld in a patch, but might not be worth the effort.
