Mystery Wires/Plugs on Mercruiser 120 (1967 Glastron V174)
« on: July 18, 2021, 03:42:54 PM »
Hi all,

I'm at the tail end of my first complete boat restoration and was wondering if someone could help me identify some mystery wires I found detached near the transom assembly.  It seems they have not been in use for quite some time, but was wondering where they should go or rather if they may have been made obsolete at some point.

Photo 1 - Me holding the two plugs (you're looking towards the transom on the right side of the engine).  There are two brown wires and a black wire which I will show in photos 2 & 3

Photo 2 - The above wires threaded through an eyelet in the transom assembly.  The right arrow shows a black wire exiting through the transom assembly, while the brown wires (left arrow) run to the left side of the engine.

Photo 3 - The brown wires run to a harness on the left side of the engine.

Also, I wanted to thank all contributors on this forum for the wealth of knowledge that I was able to find here.  I happen to have the same boat as Rich, who used to contribute greatly here, and was able to have just about every question answered throughout my restoration by looking at old threads.

I picked up this boat on Craigslist free about 1 year ago.  It hadn't run since '94 and needed floor/stringers as well as an overhaul to the exhaust system & fuel system.  Got it running the morning of the Fourth of July a few weeks ago to get out on Lake Minnetonka, where I live.

Here's a picture & video.

From what I can tell, they appear to be the trim puck wires.   One pair feed the trim gauge, the other limits trim movement while under way.

Thanks, Michael!  That certainly could be it - I'll dig into the manual schematics again now that I've got an idea.

I think you're right, Michael.  It looks as if someone had gone in and replaced these, leaving the old plugs detached.  Thank you so much for your help!
