Title: 1969 GT-160 Project Underway
Post by: Dyounge on May 29, 2019, 11:44:35 AM
Mild restoration of my ‘69 GT-160 has begun. I’m actually about a month in and have more picture updates to post in the days ahead. But wanted to post these as I know how much I enjoy seeing everyone else’s projects.

50 year old hull had lots of crazing of the gelcoat. I ground out each one with a Dremel and filled with Total Boat Total Fair

Keep up the good work

Looks like you had quite a few stress cracks you ground out.

What did use to grind them out and fill with?

The fairing compound you used is an excellent choice for filling the ground out crazing.  Only drawback is that after 24 hours, it becomes so hard, it is harder to sand.   From the looks of it, you spent a lot of time chasing cracks with the Dremel.  Great progress, hopefully be out on the water soon.   BTW, what are your plans to finish the hull?  Paint? Gelcoat?

Thanks Michael! You’re right, though. So. Much. Sanding! I knock it down with the 5” rotary sander first then finish by hand. For finishing I’m going with paint. Full system from Alexseal. Have heard really good things about them so we’ll see. Green Metallic and Oyster White with a clear coat over it all. It’s a two part polyurethane for yachts. Should hold up plenty well for my needs...hopefully!

Cut a plug out of the floor and found wet foam.  😟  So cut out access panel, ripped it all out, and put a heater on it for a few days to dry thoroughly. Stringers are solid thankfully. Put another layer of 1708 over everything in the rear for extra insurance. Then put in the pink closed cell home insulation foam and sealed it all back up. That last pic doesn’t show all the foam I did BTW. I crammed it in everywhere I could.

Bought an early 90’s Bayliner Cobra last fall to steal a motor from. 130HP 2 stroke Yamaha in good condition. Fingers crossed no troubles this season. Have an appt at Hannay’s to have it gone over after I get it installed. Removing it went pretty quick. First thing that’s gone quickly all project!

Paint time! For a paint booth, I used a 10'x20' canopy frame. Was similar price to buying PVC pipes and fittings and i figured something designed by an actual engineer would be sturdier than anything I could've cobbled together. I wrapped it in 6mil plastic that came in a 20'x100' roll and was more difficult to hang by myself than I expected. Seams were duct taped and a box fan installed. A far cry from a legit booth, but there is actual negative pressure in there with the fan on. I laid down the primer and it felt rougher than I want. I suspect too much overspray staying suspended in the air. It sanded out fine, but I will add another box fan before I shoot the topcoat. I have no expectations of a perfect, professional job, but, after all this work, need it to be decent. This is nerve racking. Hopefully I don't ruin everything. Wish me luck!

Are you painting Yamaha white and putting old Johnson decals on it ?

That’s my biggest conundrum currently. Let me put my flameproof pants on before I explain!  At first I was going to paint it like an Evinrude Strangler but use green instead of the blue. Then I landed on keeping it simpler and classier and paint the midsection of the cowl black and add chrome strips to mimic an early Mercury. But now that it’s implementation time I have all kinds of doubt. This will sound like sacrilege to some but I am open to suggestions.

I would still label it a Yamaha. I'm not trying to fool anybody into thinking it is an actual Strangler or Kiekhaefer. Just trying to backdate the motor a bit so it looks like it belongs on a 1969 boat.

LOVE the Strangler look !
Wouldn't offend me a bit ..
I would stay with the blue, but maybe trim off the "Strangler" off the bottom of the 135 decal.

Would black vents / trim in rear of motor interfere with decal placement ?

OR .. Maybe "Super Strangler" !

I think it's a great idea to match the engine look to the watercraft vintage.  Likely won't fool the diehards, but in the end, it's your boat, do what you want.

A modern engine with a more 'period' look wouldn't bother me one bit either...

Good news is she's painted! Bad news is the color is not what i expected. I'm trying to hold off on final judgement until I can get it out in the sun, but the green seems darker and bluer than the chip I was sent. It is what is is. I'm certainly not starting over at this point! I just hope the interior still works with the new shade.

On to the trailer this evening and then getting motor rigged this weekend. Appointment at Hannays on Monday. I want to be on the water before the end of the month!

Looks great, hope to see some pictures of it out in the sunlight.  Hopefully the color is closer to your expectations then.  Over a light sealer, colors tend to be lighter, I wouldn't have guessed darker.

After a bit of drama, got the boat back on trailer, motor on but not properly rigged yet, rolled out into the driveway and some of the interior pieces set in place. It does look a little better than when in garage but not much. I’m going to roll with it for now but there will be a respray in my not so distant future. Silver lining is I’m sure I’ll do a better job my second time! In the last pic you can see the color chip, the actual paint and an interior panel for comparison. I do think it’s more blue than the chip but not as far off as I had first thought. I just picked the wrong color. Should’ve had my wife pick it! Live and learn.

*thinking out loud* I like the color on its own it just clashes with the interior. Anyone ever used Vinyl paint? Thoughts?

I’ve always loved this color.... 66 Pontiac reef turquoise.. vinyl paint will work, I’m just not sure how long it would last in the sun...

I have had great results with this product, my only issue is that some sunblock products will cause it to transfer.  Holds up well in my CVZ, so much so that I haven't seen up the new interior yet.  Can't say it's better or worse than the others, just have experience with this on Marine vinyl.

Thank you very much for the suggestions. I like that SEM is designed for marine industry...or maybe just marketed??? Color Bond has many more color options, though. I’ve got some decisions to make. Thanks again!

There seems to be quite a difference in the new color compared to the sample, if I were to guess, your new color looks like teal?  I painted a very back in the late 80's that looked nearly identical.   Just curious, what did the paint vendor offer as an explanation.

You are correct. The color is more of a dark teal than green. I just sent a message to the rep at Alexseal this morning. I'll see what he says. I should've done it before now, but have been busting my butt to get motor running for my appointment at Hannay's yesterday. Thankfully the motor checked out excellent!

Here's the drama I was talking about. While trying to get the trailer back under it, I must've bumped one of the stands and my freshly painted hull went crashing onto the garage floor.  :'( It was a pretty slow fall as it all started leaning to one side or maybe I just saw it in slow motion as my brain counted up all the hours I had just put into this thing. No hull damage thankfully, but some scrapes and scuffs in the paint which will have to be touched up. This is why exhausted people shouldn't operate heavy machinery!

You do get a pretty good view of the new rollers on the trailer, though! Also replaced hubs, springs, wheels and tires so it should be good to go this summer.

Ouch!  Thankfully no one got hurt.  Hindsight is always clearer, but I noticed no bow eye/winch line hooked up.  Don't feel bad, I forgot to set the pawl on my winch a long time ago, dropped the stern right on the ramp in front of what seemed like hundreds of people.  Had the winch line been 3' shorter, it would not have come off.    Looking back I blame it all on the college women's rowing team for being at the same ramp..........

I've still been working hard at it, but nothing as transformational as a new paint job. Veneered dash, holes cut, new gauges, new switches, new steering system and wheel. Speedometer, voltmeter, and fuel gauge hooked up and operational. Still working on tach and temp gauge. Have water pressure gauge but may wait to get that one done. Wife complained about lack of storage last season, so replaced 12gal bow tank with dual 7gal custom aluminum tanks at the stern, wired with electric switchover valve. Dual batteries with dual circuit isolator system wired in. Slow going, but I'm getting there. Trying to be on the water this weekend, but that to do list is awfully long still!

Nice touch on the dash and tank fill.  Also nice to see you have your daughter involved, another Glastron project family bonding moment.

Now I'm getting to the fun stuff. Installing trim and hardware. All new solid brass hardware. Custom Glastron emblems. Custom vents with mesh and cutouts behind them to allow actual airflow. They're actually hot rod seat medallions. Wasn't a fan of the vent stickers. Especially when it then had chrome vents stuck on top right above the fake vent. A little tedious cutting out the mesh, but no duplicate vents and it 's all functional. I'll still be running a blower to be safe. I also want to put some mesh inside the big aluminum scoop, but that will have to come later.

I did another thing. In an attempt to backdate my modernish Yamaha, I painted it and then trimmed with chrome molding strips to give it a vintage look. Not trying to pass it off as an old Merc but definitely inspired by them. Also took inspiration from the Evinrude Strangler with the 130 Yamaha decal placement. I think I went too dense with the chrome. Will sit with it For a while (too many other things to do) but I think the strips need to be thinner. Good thing is it peels right off!
