Title: Packajet 455 Log Exhaust Manifold Removal
Post by: Rsthurin on June 24, 2019, 10:18:14 AM
Hello,

I am going to replace my exhaust manifold gaskets as it seems one of the manifolds has loosened off quite a bit! I can't find any documentation of the best way to remove these. It looks like I have to remove the riser and reach in the manifold to get the bolts?  Or is there a different way to access them?

Thanks for the help!

I'll have to make an intro thread soon, too busy trying to get this boat running right!

There are 4 plugs on the bottom edge of the manifolds , remove them and you can access the mounting bolts

If the manifold plugs have been in for a very long time its hard to
get them out .After removing them the manifold bolts have a 5/16
allen head . I have those manifolds on my boat and have had lots of problems
with them leaking, even with good mating surface. Just installed a
set of Remflex gaskets on mine because of leakage problems, only 2 hrs. on them
so  I don't know how they will work.No other gasket has worked for me so far
even header gaskets. A lot of people use high temp silicone and no gasket ,but it
hasn't worked for me.

The factory didn't use gaskets originaly.

Was able to sort it out. Definitely going to change the manifold style. It was pretty rough trying to get to the interior bolts with the engine still in the boat. The gasket is holding so far, I did find out the manifold had cracked, been repaired and cracked again. I just repaired it a second-time while im on the hunt for a easier  to install set.

Cv-19, Its a 76 cvx20 with the 455 Packajet. Also where did you find that parts diagram? I have the manual but it doesn't give a breakdown like that.

I have and old Berkeley Jet Catalog that the info. came from . Do you have a auto style
water pump or a plate .I think all the 455 OLDS Packajet used the water pump, but not sure
about the last ones made. Not sure about the 20 but I think you are limited as to any other manifolds.
The Hardin and Glenco manifolds are wider and the outlet are about 3 in. lower than the Berkeley ones.

It has the auto style water pump. That's a bummer about the exhaust sitting wider and lower...

  Manifold specs.

If you use paper on the allen head of the bolt to lock the wrench on
you wont loose the bolt in the manifold when putting back on .
the bolts are stainless and a magnet wont work.
