Gimbal Ring Replacement
« on: October 24, 2018, 10:36:00 AM »
Hi - I will have the motor out of my boat and of course the out drive off. I need to replace my gimbal ring and pin. I have an MC1 drive with the splined gimbal ring and pin. Can I do this with the gimbal housing still attached to the boat without drilling holes in it to access the bolts or would it be simple enough to just pull the housing, replace it off the boat and reseal it?

If you can't get enough clearance to work through the steering arm hole to unbolt the pivot pin then it might be easier to remove the transom assembly to repair it, then remount it with a new gasket.

Simple enough when the motor is out?

I received an almost perfect gimbal ring and parts for my MC1.
Looks like new, the splines are perfect on the ring and the pin and I was given the arm with the bushing for the steering.
What transom gasket do I need for the hull? I figure since I will have the motor out and out drive off, I might as well pull the gimbal housing and do it the easy way.
Any tips on sealing the housing to the transom and torque specs?

The transom assembly gasket on that should be a large foam O-ring that sits in a channel on the outer transom shield. You have to use contact cement to glue the seal into the channel. As long as the transom surface is clean and flat that should be all you need but sometimes I like to put a light coat of spray adhesive contact cement on the transom face to give the gasket a little extra sticking power, then just clean off any overspray afterwards with some acetone.

Is there a torque spec for the screw in the center of the pin underneath? Its a splined shaft with the set screw. Heck, i don't even know if its still in there after 40 years! That may be my whole issue?

But is there a spec?

Of course more Qs. Anyone know what seal I'm going to need for the gimbal pin in the gimbal housing? Whats it called and do later model seals work?

So I would love to change the ring and pin out without removing the transom mount. Possible?

Also, I see there is a set screw in the bottom of the replacement pin. Is it possible that on my current one all I need to do is tighten the set screw to take the slop out?

And I'm having a hard time locating a transom seal, exhaust elbow gasket/seal and the two rubber gaskets for the lower transom anode bolts.

Got the ring and pin replaced, now to put it all back together. Its not totally slop-free (it was a good used gimbal ring and pin) but its wayyyy better than the sloppy one I had before, I would have thought the set screw under the pin would expand the pin to take the slop out. (maybe someone has suggestions?).

Just a guess based on the supplied pictures, but it appears to use a brass/bronze sleeve that the pivot rides on.  Can this sleeve be pressed in/out and reamed to size?

Here is the set screw and the split splined shaft. it seems if I could get a slightly larger diameter set screw or tapered one it would snug up the splines?
