CV23 Props
« on: September 09, 2013, 02:47:12 PM »
Just curious what other guys are using for props on the CV23's. If you have speed numbers even better.

Right now I am running a regular mercury 19P stainless on the 23 and running about 55mph (phone GPS). 260 mercruiser

I'm using a 21 pitch Power Tech stainless, and Red clocked me at 63 MPH GPS handheld in pretty choppy water.  Not sure on the HP, but it seems to be a good all around prop.  A few weeks ago we took the two 16 year old nephews tubing for about 4 hours and when taking off I couldn't tell any difference in how quick it came up and planed out vs without the tube.  Also only used about 12 gallons of gas for the outing, was proud of that!  I think I would really like the 21 pitch Power Tech OFX, the blades are shaped different from mine.  Ran one of the OFX's 23 pitch on Burnin Daylight last year and really liked it.

You have GOT to be pulling over 300 hp from your motor Barb.

Jason is the prop that you have a mouse ear shaped blade?  I gave Brian an unpolished stainless prop at Red Wing last year that had been altered to a 19 pitch.

Red would be a better guess on the horsepower, but I have 2 new boxed Power Techs, a 19 that screams out of the hole and the 21 that I have been running with the new engine and drive.  Finally about to get 10 hours on the rig.

Barb,
When I sold the boat to Jason, I gave him that prop.  I'm not sure if he's run it or not.  So...  thanks for being so kind!  Your donation stayed with the boat!

PS...  I still have your 1st aid kit from the last time I saw you.  :)

You better get that first aid kit back to her Brian, she's running that 23 pitch lab'd powertech on Burnin Daylight now, she cut a slice off one of her fingers the last time she handled it, and Cody at the shop sliced open the palm of his hand, and yes ... I warned them both about it. I did take a little edge off it with a whet stone, but it's still got some charactor.

Yep, that is the prop!

Just curious if anything better can be done. Maybe a 21P power tech is worth a try.

Jason I tried a 4 blade Rev 4  21p on my 18 and it was the best prop I have tried to date. I rented it from Supreme Marine in Minneapolis it was only 25.00 to rent a prop. Then you can try a few and not be stuck with a prop that dont work for ya. I also tried a Rev4 23p and a big  23p 3 blade. Just my thoughts
I think this has become an addiction.

Jason, I wish you were closer.  You could try out all 3.  I couldn't spin enough RPM with that 23p, even with the extra HP.

The 21 on Barbs CV-23 is a 14 1/2 diameter, the 23 was the OFX and it's 15 1/8 diameter, diameter is an importand concideration for chosing a prop
the one on Burning Daylight is a 14 1/4 X 23 powertech, but it has been hammered, ground on, ground off, blades thinned and sharpened, it has the performance of a 24 on the prop calculator @10% slipage, 5000 rpm  - 68 mph

I used mercurys prop calculator. Here is what they recommend. Sounds about right but I have my doubts on the Laser as it seems to work best on lighter boats. I think A Revolution would be worth a shot in both a 19 and 21.

Thought I'd revive this thread as there are a lot more CV23's in the group now then there were 6 years ago. I tried the 21 rev4 and have been using that for last few years but noticed my RPM's around 4200. Recently picked up a rev4 19p and getting about same performance. Once I bought the 19P I noticed the vent plugs in it. The 21p had the vent holes but no plugs. My little bit of research on those plugs basically says removing them helps with take off and leaving them in helps with top end. Kind of explains why the 21p without plugs performs like a 19p with plugs. You can buy plugs with different size holes in them to find the sweet spot for your boat.

I though the hole's just help vent on take off's and don't do anything as speed increase ?
I'll have to do some searching …

I did some research on these when I got my CVX-18.

I believe that the venting hole and different size vent plugs are primarily effective with 2 strokes, which generally don't start making their torque and hp until they hit higher revs.  The bubbles give them some slip to rev up faster before they grip.  If your running a 4 stroke with low end torque, you would plug the hole.  At high speed, they have little if any effect.

Mine is a bit different then most. I am running a 23p Rev4. About 65 mph and can do it with 6 people and full fuel and cooler.
I think this has become an addiction.
