Title: CVX18 with 260 V8 Prop recommendations
Post by: Allblueacr on December 11, 2019, 01:43:59 PM
Would appreciate recommendations for overall performance. The pyramid of water skier days are over ;) but we may pull around the odd tube.

thanks in advance

Kind of depends on how much HP your going to have.
Ask Jeff what he did to his motor, that thing FLYS !

For all around performance with a 5.7 260HP in a CVX18 I'd start with a 21P Laser II. The Laser II's run good on these boats. For all out top speed you have the torque & HP to spin a 23P prop but if you plan to pull a tube every so often and have the boat loaded with people, that might be a little too tall of a pitch.

I have a 19P High Five I put on mine for water sports and a 22P Enertia for cruising. But I've got the boat anchor 305 not the 350 in my '85.

I have run a 21p mirage and a 23p mirage.  I went back to the 21p after the 23p because it is so much nicer at lower speeds and effortless to come up on plane.  The 23 with a full boat had to work coming up, and there was only 1 mph difference in my top end.  I have a stock 260 5.7 with stock through prop exhaust and low hours.  I'd like to try a laser II 21 just to see the difference.

The Laser II has a smaller diameter than a Mirage and works good on these boats because they are small and light. A Mirage is something I'd run a heavier boat. The Laser will also do a better job of picking the front of the boat up. I'd be surprised if you didn't see better performance out of the Laser versus your Mirage but you never know until you give it a try.

I'm guessing no one actually tested one versus the other yet?

Here are a couple charts from the 1991 Mercury Accessories catalog. I've never owned a CVX-18 so my advice isn't worth much but I would expect that either a 23" QSS or a 23" Laser II would be a nice all around prop for your boat with the 260.

I didn’t like the Laser on the 20. Mirage had a better overall performance. Don’t know how it’ll handle on the 18. But as others said 21” for skiing and tubing will be your best bet.

Any experience with the Vengeance prop?

Quicksilver Stainless Steel

Quicksilver is Mercury produces that are sold at other then Mercury dealers ..
Like Walmart, auto parts stores, Fleet Farm, etc.
On some props like the Laser II the finish isn't as polished and no "Laser II" cast into hub.

The prop charts are from the 1991 Accessories catalog. In 1991, all the props were Quicksilver props. The standard aluminum was Quicksilver Aluminum, and the standard stainless was Quicksilver Stainless Steel - QSS. The QSS had the same blade shape and rake as the aluminum prop but due to the increased strength of material the blades were a little thinner and there was less deflection under load so they claimed higher efficiencies.
