winterezed Mercruiser 140, forgot gas stabilizer/preserver
« on: October 24, 2016, 09:17:48 AM »
I got the boat winterized this weekend.  After i had all the water jackets drained, RV anti-freeze in and the oils changed, then I remembered the gas stabilizer/preserver.

So, I poured some of the Starbrite Star Tron into the gas tank (mixed with a little more gasoline) so the tank gas would be ok over winter.
Is there a way I can get stabilizer into the carburetor bowl without starting the engine and re-doing all the winterizing?
Trickle some into the carb fuel intake nozzle with a hose and funnel?

Can you just drain the bowl ?
Screw on bottom or side of float bowl ?

There's no drain on those carbs but you can still add some stabilizer to it. Take off the flame arrester and drop some into the large air tube in front of the choke plate.

Oh good!  I was hoping there'd be an easy way!

The metal tube is normally meant as a pour-out tube, right?

Yes, but the carb would have to have a serious flooding problem for it to pour out. Otherwise it's a vent that is completely open to the bowl. Newer 2 barrel carbs don't have the tube but instead have a vented slot in the casting which is also angled like the tube and does the same job.

Gas already has stabilizer put in it at the refinery. I wouldn't worry about it. I winterized my non-glastron boat this weekend and didn't put any stabilizer in the E10 fuel. I always leave the tank 1/4 full or lower before I store it and just add fresh gas in the spring.

I can tell you from personal experience that my lawn mower and snow blower WILL have their fuel systems/carburetors gummed up and require a cleanout or rebuild if I fail to put some kind of gasoline stabilizer in the tanks for off-season idleness.  I have been using Sea Foam in the snow blower and lawn mower gas.  When I add Sea Foam to gas before seasonal idle periods, I don't have gum-ups in those engines.  Gasoline stabilizer is clearly helpful.
