CVX 16 in Louisiana
« on: September 09, 2010, 06:26:04 AM »
Received some not so good news on the 115 on the back of my '77 CVX 16. She needs a ring job as two of the cylinders are running 120 and 125 psi vs the others are 130 and 135.  I'll have it rebuilt next spring. Luckily, I have a '96 Evinrude 88 SPL that runs like new so that will be going on the back for now.

Any thoughts or experience on installing a 6 inch jack plate on a CVX 16? The transom is rock solid with no cracks. Is this transom, in design, able to hold up to the added stress of a jack plate?

How do I post pictures on the forum?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that doesn't really sound like a huge drop in compression.  Some of the mechanics here might want to chime in.  I'm not sure a complete tear down would be nessicary with a low of 120 psi.

Yeah, I always thought the rule was that they should be within 10% of each other...so 135lbs on the one cylinder = 13.5 lbs....so the 120 is close.  I'm not so sure I'd be worried about that yet.

Was there some reason you had the mechanic test it in the first place?

For what it's worth I'd run a healthy dose of 'SeaFoam' through that 115 & see what happens before condemning it. Mebbe pull the spark plugs & pour a shot in there too. Might help might not. But I've seen that juice do some amazing things. Might could be ya gotta couple sticky/gummed up rings in those low psi cylinders. Sea Foam can help with that

Brought it in to get the carbs rebuilt. Had a lot of lag in the mid range. If I took off at a medium rate it would shake pretty bad. Idle was good and anything about 3000 was spot on. WOT was perfect. I was curious about the compression so he did a check and a leak down as well. The two cylinders on the right (looking from the rear of motor) are 135 and 130 with only 5 lb. leak.  The other two cylinders are 125 and 120 with 12 to 15 lb leak.

He loaded up the cylinders with something like Seafoam and didn't see any improvement. I did run a can through the motor via the gas and about 8 gal. gas.  Once I get it back I may do another treatment directly in to the cylinder and see if that helps.

New H2O pump, new pick up screen, plugs and fuel lines. Should be running good next time out on the river.
