And so it begins!
« on: April 01, 2012, 07:08:42 PM »
Found a few extra minutes out of watching the kids and yard work today to get a good look at my seat. Here's what I've found and done so far!

My "helper" working on the last screw before removing the seat!

Seat removed! So that's what the carpet color should be!

May be hard to see, but half the screws are completely rusted and the hinges on the right of this pic have completely ripped out of the wood:

A good shot of the damage. I'm hoping I can remove the 8000 staples, repair from the inside, then re-attach. The wood isn't quite as bad as I thought but we'll see!

Josh, that is the same exact problems I had with my lounge seats, except that the wood for my seats was rotted. Oh if you haven't tried removing the hinge screws yet, the hammer in nuts for the hinge screws might have rusted enough to weaken the wood around them causing them to spin.

Same here ...
Driver seat wood rotted by out side hinge.
Your seat bases look good.

Might be able to piece together the vinyl on seat, add a little to edges, stratch a little from bottom.

Yeah, I'll have to see about the hinges that pulled out of the wood after I pull the vinyl. Luckily the fabric on the back of the vinyl is in really good condition (it ripped along seam lines) so I'm hoping to be able to reinforce from underneath, and give a little slack to take some of the pressure off the new stitches. Now that the seat is in the garage I should have time after the boyos are in bed. I'll post more pics as the project continues!

The wood and vinyl both look good. it will be great if you can salvage that vinyl and pull it back together.

What are all those colorful little sticks in the first picture, did you bribe your helper with pixie sticks?

Lol, the sticks are from a game of "Ker-Plunk". Liam thought he could use "science" to break through the rusty screws with them!

Looks like he tried a whole new set of Craftsman screwdrivers first.

Yeah, there are three different sizes of screws involved both Phillips and flathead. I was covering my bases!

Pulled staples from the bad seat last night. So apparently that middle section where the pleats are is a whole separate section connected to the base independently of the side and front foam.  ???

New plan: sew up the rips, re-staple, and just slap on some urethane on the underside of the wood so it doesn't get any worse. Maybe try to re-enforce the one hinge that has the screws pulled out of the wood.

Well my idea of easily stitching up the rips has hit a snag.  :-/ The thread is pulling right through the vinyl, so it looks like I'll need to re-enforce the rips from beneath after all. Maybe today or tomorrow night. Brought the seat down to the basement as it has gotten dang cold out to be in the garage after the kiddo's are in bed!

Look at your local fabric shop for that iron on material patch. It comes in black and maybe a gray. My brother use it to reinforce a couple of rips in his Master Craft cover and it's holding like a vise. Iron it on from the back and it may just do the job you need it to.

Great idea! I was thinking about that at first, but the Hancock Fabric lady talked me out of it.

I'll give it a shot!

Every time I pull any hardware, I replace it with stainless. The downside is that is its soft. I've found a mix of stainless and steel used on my boats. Not sure why. Probably the more exposed stuff was stainless. Menards has a pretty good selection these days.

Stainless is certainly a great way to go.

I'm thinking that in order to get at the backside of the rips I'm going to have to pull all the staples, take the vinyl all the way off, remove the foam (keeping it as good as possible of course!) and then I can see just how bad the seat bases are. The frame base is still good so that's fine.... Hopefully this week things will move forward.

Thanks for all the tips guys!
