There was a long discussion on 2-stroke oils on this forum some time ago. Jerry G believes in Amsoil. I did some research on what top outboard motor repair people thought was the best  and the conclusion I came to was that pertroleum based oils like Mercury Premium Plus gave better protection. I have used Premium Plus in the 1974 Mercury 115 HP for 25 years and the pressure is 128 in each cylinder. Plan to use the Mercury oil in the 115 Johnson too.

I mix Amsoil 90 to 1. Not a lot of time to tell you about anything other tah they start better, run smoother snf don't leave a cloud of smoke, but with injection you will be injecting just as much either way.

Heard good things, and bad things 'bout Amsoil. Have never run it so I have no personal experience. Normally run Quicksilver synthetic blend @ 50:1. Pure synthetic when I can find it. Lil pricey I reckon @ close to $30 bucks a gallon but hey she's worth it.

Not bragging or trying to discount the fact that most 2 stroke motors will run fine with just about any TC-W3 rated oil. But I'm purty hard on my motors. Imagioned or not I'd like to believe synthetic delivers a lil better performance'n protection?

I'm not up on all the technical properties of all the different 2 cycle oils available but my Merc always seemed to run smoother when I used Mercury/Quicksilver Premium. I don't know if it's just a psychological thing but that's what I will continue to use.

The Premium Plus actually is a synthectic. The Premium is a blend... Run the Premium Plus, in any brand, and any size. Also run Startron additive for ethanol gas. Even if they say it's non-ethanol, run it anyway. It's insurance against ethanol, and it's a stabilizer, so win-win.

The Premium Plus protects against ethanol and non-ethanol fuels, it doesn't clog jets and lean out your fuel, and it mixes better, also it's good for high performance motors both new and old. Can't think of any reason not to spend the extra money for it. It is an indesputible advantage for every single application. Are there cheaper alternatives for certain applications? Yes. But why chance it. I've run it in new and old. No load up at idle, minimal smoke thru the throttle range, and of course, no engine issues. All my most trusted local mechanics say the same thing... run Startron, and run Premium Plus Merc oil. Those who do have no issues, those who don't bring their motors in for rebuild. Sounds simple to me.

Well...my CVZ-19 (Johnson 235) had been run on Amsoil mixed 90:1 for around 10 years.  The new owner and I chat often and he mentioned that a compression test he did last fall shows 1 cyl is down to 50:1 on a compression test.  The Evinrude 175 powerhead that was on it originally was replaced b/c it was 'tired' (low compression too)...that was also Amsoil mixed 90:1.

Motor still runs fine, but the idle fights a little bit.

Is it isolated?  I won't use it again...I know others like it.  If I ever have a 2 Stroke again, it'll be OEM oil only.

I'm not convinced its not too lean even at 90:1...that you give up lubrication for less smoke.

(Sorry to feed the argument again...)

I switched from Mercury Premium to Mercury Premium Plus last summer.  Seems like my '77 1150 runs smoother at all speeds and smokes less in slow no wake zones.

I think most Outboard failures are not from oil failure, but water pump failure.
