Even the ugly ones need to be saved.....74cv-18. Check out the outdrive.. Never seen one like it. Have a 302 ford-mercruiser to replace the old merc.-kiekhaefer. Water intake under hull like a jet. Full railing from windshield to transom. What a "can of worms" have I opened.
-
That outdrive can't be original. Is it? Was it a jet before? Seems like most of these I see are 351 Jets.
Only made two years 74-75. Seem to be somewhat rare.
Can't wait to watch this project!
-
Yeah...never seen one up close!
Should be a fun project!
-
Water intake under hull ?
Very COOL !
I'm emailing you a PDF with more Mercruiser info.
Mercruiser stuff ...

-
So a 351 jet in 74. 455 Jet in 75. Mercruiser 200 (351?) both years.
-
All the other cv-18s I've seen have been jets, so when I saw this one with a l/o I had to see it. And after looking at it and saying "no thanks, to much work" . He said do you want it because I'm just going to scrap it... The words I hate... He also had a compleat mercruiser ford 302 that he was going to put into it. So I gave him some cash, will below that it was worth and now I have another major project.. I've never seen an outdrive like this one and it must be original because you can see the glass work is. Any info on that outdrive??? I'd like to know what it is. It has the same emblem that's on old merc outboards. I'll try to get a picture and post.
-
Looks like a Mercruiser ii drive. 1962-69.
This site has exploded part drawings: https://www.marineengine.com/parts/mercruiser-sterndrive-parts/ (https://www.marineengine.com/parts/mercruiser-sterndrive-parts/)
Now that you mention the glasswork it does look original. How that ended up on that boat is beyond me. Special order? Dealer install?

Buckaroo post some pictures of his CVC18 jet on CGOA ...

Your must have been a I/O from the start, unless it was totally rebuilt at some point.

Took a little closer look at this outdrive today.. Everything on it is huge.. Shafts,Rams,prop... Looks like it should be on some 40' cruiser not a 18' glastron.. Closer look at the glass also. if it was a conversion it was done when it was new.
-
Is that the "Water pick up" you were talking about ?
Maybe Rich will know what it is ...
Looks like the jet version has something in same spot, but not used.
-
I read somewhere instead of tilting up out of the water it rotates to the left. Look like that is true? The trim cylinders must be just for trim.
-
Yes,that looks like the same place the water pick-up is. Jason, do you mean the hole outdrive twists out of the way? There is a round collar that could go all the way through.. Could be,the tilt doesn't go up very far. And the Rams are about twice as thick as a regular mercruiser. Need to find out what this is......
-
Looks like maybe it's suppose to have a manual crank on the inside.
-
Picked up the donor motor-out drive last night. It's all there and is "suppose to" run. I'm going to wire it up and see what happens.
-
I've seen quite a few CV18 with a sterndrive. But all of them were Volvos.
We even have one here in Hamburg.
Sure is an odd outdrive though.
-
Here are a few pics of Volvo CV18s:
-
The CVCs had two different engine covers, one with a cushion on top which was the jet and the other one with a full fiberglass cover - the sterndrive. On this CV18 you can see the sterndrive engine cover. It seems this was not an option on the CVs?
-
SO ... some one got the old Mercruiser to fit into the Volvo cut out ?
The blue CV with the low windshield looks kind of cool ...
-
Cool
Glad you saved that one Bryan.
That water intake is nothing like the set up on my jet.
-
I'm pretty sure that the water intake is for cooling of the motor not a jet. I would just like to see what it looked like with the motor and outdrive connected. Still have not been able to find any pictures of the old merc. Fury iekhaefer outdrive. On the other side I got the donor motor all wired up and it almost came to life before the starter gave up. Now that everything looks possible I have to put it on the back burner and finish the other two I'm doing first. the 73 cv-16 is all striped and ready to start building stringers and floor.
-
Oops, I did it again! Found this the other day and had to go look... Yep! Brought it home! 75 cv-18 with Volvo out drive. Motor has blown frost plugs, but I have a couple spare ones. Wood is good!!!! Nice hard floor. Nice dash only missing the glove box cover. Windshield is the nicest I've seen. Paint is a realy bad, so that's going to be hardest part. I'll drop a differant motor in clean it up and who knows.. Maybe have it at the gathering in August.
-
NICE !
Are the railing good ?
From CL ad ...

Yep. That's it,and no I got it for a lot less. Once I got it out and into the light it looked to good to pass, especially since I have everything I think it needs. The railings are great and the windshield is clear. The railings on the blue one I have are also great but the shield is cloudy so if anyone needs some railings or parts let me know. I will probably part out the blue one and put the motor I have in this one. The trailer has to go..... it's just to crude for me to use. Should be worth it's weight in scrap. Unless anyone wants it?
-
Cool! Looks promising?
-
Played with the duck 2 a little today to see if it would run.... Didn't take long...No good... Motor froze .. But I have a good one to swap.. I've taken many mercruisers out but not any volvos or is it omc?... Never could tell them apart.. Any help please..What's the easy 1.2.3. On pulling the motor on this one? By the way.. If anyone wants this trailer let me know.. Cheep!
-
I have a manual for the 270 Outdrive...
Got it off the Volvo web site ... Can send you a link.
Not easy to find stuff on the site , but there was stuff for older drives and motors.
-
That would be great please post it. I have watched a few on utube and it looks basically the same as merc. Only compleatly differant. :) I'll give it a try and let you all know.
-
Sent link in a PM.
-
The gimbal shaft seems to be stuck in the motor... Merc's I've been able to pry against something and get it put. But the Volvo doesn't seem to have anything to pry on to get it loose-free, any ideas out there??
-
Could you rig up a slide hammer some how? Maybe with a chain? Get some penetrating oil (ATF/Acetone) on the shaft?
-
Big tree, long chain, and about 30mph should do it! Seriously though, no idea, never worked on one of those. If all the fasteners are out, and it's just the shaft corroded in the coupler, I'd probably use a Porto power, or in it's absence, a couple of small Jack's and a bar to wedge it off. Fairly sizable drive, prob be hard to motivate it with a slide hammer.
-
It's not a big tree but it seams to hold it with the come-a-long. Sprayed with p.b. Now I'll see what happens.. I'll try 30 mph next.
-
Way I see it nobody's ever overdosed on PB Blaster and patience. Let the juice work ...
-
Just thinking of another angle, we are all accustomed to the input shaft having splines and providing the slip joint action, but could the type of drive use splines in the outdrive head and the driveshaft actually bolts to the engine?
-
Anyone know if I can pull the motor from the bell housing without removing the outdrive?
-
First high of the day! Went outside today and gave the outdrive a hit with the hammer and out it came! Pb blaster and time. Pulled it back into the garage and pulled the motor out pulled all the small stuff off the old one.. Pulled the "good motor" I've Been holding onto for the last 4 years, got some of the small stuff off it to get it ready, pulled the old motor mount off and... One of the frost plugs was gone. And now the low of the day. Pulled the oil plug and nothing but Water for the first few seconds. Got almost 2 gal of oil filled water out of it. So I'm guessing the "good motor" is also junk. Anyone want a project??
-
Found a motor for ya.

-
That would work great if it was a 302 ford, than I would be all over it.. Thanks I'm still looking! Anyone have a spare 302? I want to use all the rest of the parts off the original motor-Outdrive. And not have to change the boat.
-
So I see this add on Craig’s list.... that boat looks familiar... yep.. called the guy, and he was glad to hear from me. Turns out he ran into some bad luck and lost the boat...I’ll just leave it at that.. the boat was his grandfathers that he bought and fixed up and repainted it.. had fun then.. lost it. Wanted it back and I said no problem, if anyone finds one of my old toys that I want back I would do the same... I told him what I had into so far and would let him have it for that and he was excited... but... hard times means he couldn’t come up with the cash.. I told him I’d keep it for him until he can come up the cash. So how knows maybe in a few weeks the old gal can go back home..
-
So after two winters in storage it’s time to get the duck looking more like a swan... I put it away when I got a good motor in it and now it’s time to finish... got it home and with the shrink wrap on it ,it was like opening a new Easter present... got it all stripped naked today and now it’s time to get all the baby poop brown chameleon paint off and see what under.
-
I knew there was a glastron under all that crappy paint just screaming to get out.... and it does... why would anyone cover up such nice lines? Hopefully within the next couple weeks the swan will emerge.... gotta love that “swoosh”...
-
Wow! How did you remove the paint?
-
Sanding, sanding, sanding, sanding and some more sanding :P
-
It’s all in sealer now. Got a few runs so I have to fix that before the paint.. hopefully tomorrow. The more I paint the less I know.... Anyone want to give lessons on how to paint?
-
Back in color.... didn’t turn out so bad... little wet sanding and a buff should look nice. The swan is coming out... colors, orange crush pearl and Wimbledon white.
-
Looking Good. It doesn't look like you need much guidance in painting. My painting skills stop at a rattle can.
-
Time to put it back together..
-
" orange crush pearl "
LOVE the color !
Looks GREAT !
-
I've amateur painted vehicles for 30 years, and honestly, your work looks great. Seems over the years they found a way to formulate products that allow us to recover from the mistakes we all make. Nothing to be ashamed of, I think it looks great. Hope to see it in person in August.
-
Someone in Europe did a custom windshield on his CV18.
Looks kind of cool ..
-
Well it only took 2 1/2 yrs. but my “quick flip” is done...
The ugly duck is now a swan...
-
Couple more
-
VERY VERY NICE !
Look great !
Love the color ..
-
Looking great! When's the water trial?
-
Amazing work!

Very nicely done, hope to see it in August.
-
Looking good Brian nice work.
Sounds like we will be around in August.
-
Stunning!
That is one lucky boat to have someone care for it.
-
Still have a few tweaks to do to the motor but hopefully I’ll get it in the water soon.. my brother bought it from me so it will be at the gathering at T.I.and we are looking forward to it. The hole family is coming and are bringing all my project boats.. I am just an amateur so they are not ”showboats” but I like to call them “go boats”.. . “ keep them on the water !”
