Title: Prop Testing Day II - White Bear Lake Wednesday 7/6/2011
Post by: David CVX-16 on July 01, 2011, 06:32:17 PM
Ross and I are thinking of boating on White Bear Lake Wednesday, July 6th beginning at 10 AM to test props. Ross needs about a 21" pitch something on his 100 HP Mercury, and I have a untested PowerTech PTR 21" stainless steel and a Quicksilver 23" 2-blade bronze to try on my boat with 115 HP Mercury.

I have the Garmin handheld GPS, and the prior Prop Testing Day I gave interesting results of the three bronze 21" props all within one MPH of each other.

If Wednesday's weather is unfavorable, will reschedule for Friday, July 8th.

Let me know if you think you can make it.

David

If you guys go Friday I might be able to stop by.
I could sit on the beach with a wrench and props ... Like a NASCAR pit crew ... Pull in and I'll switch props and push ya out ... LOL

Gregg, can you switch days? We could not only test props, but just drift or go slowly, and eat supper at the pavilion or Scott's - make a whole day of it.

I'm in for either day, just let me know.  If you guys want we can always grill over at my place, there's room to beach a few boats where my dock is.  Was just out all day in WBL, it's up about 1 1/2 ft from last year and there really aren't any 'danger zones' that I can report on, all the old prop bustin' islands are now above water and CLEARLY marked. Looking forward to it!

I think it would be nice to have a outing, hey it will be July 6th and the summer is one quarter of the way over. If Ross can stay into the evening, I can, and we could have a supper on the lake, either at Scott's or at the White Bear Lake pavilion. Jason, are you going to bring your boat and do you want any more prop testing? Could even bring my over-the-hub 22" chopper to try for giggles.

I'll certainly be around all day and the offer to dine at my place stands; it's a block walk to my house from the dock.  The pavillion works for me too; let me know when and where and I'll make myself available.  Come on over Jason and others, this should be fun!

I am open for the entire day, so if we want to make a day of it, great! It'll be my first time out and once on the water, I never get enough.
I'll bring my extra tank in case Jason shows.

The day on the water at White Bear Lake this Wednesday is unstructured because we do not know who is coming or how long it will last. Ross and David will be on the water at 10 AM to test props. With the prop changings and test runs, this may take three to four hours. After that it is open, be it chit chatting, boating on the lake or whatever. Please call me on my cell phone 612-363-3704 if you plan to come and the time you expect to arrive, just in case we have called it a day.  Bring your own food, beverage and plateware for the rest of the day. We could eat at the pavilion or on Scott's beach.

Probably, but I try to avoid driving into town during my "off" time.
When are you leaving for vacation?
If you want to take a short drive, I plan on being around Thursday to Sunday for the most part. Not all that far. About 28 miles from Stillwater.

We started the prop testing at 10:30 AM on White Bear Lake. The skies were sunny, just a gentle breeze, and few boats. It was Ross's first time out this year, and my second time. Scott showed up later and we all parked in a bay with the three boats tied together and talked. Scott left for work about 3:30 and Ross and I left at 5 PM. A leasurely and relaxing day. The prop tests are as follows (all GPS recorded):

Ross:

Solas 19" 3-blade aluminum          41.8 MPH @5,000 RPM
Quicksilver 21" 2-blade bronze      45.6 MPH @5,000 RPM
Quicksilver 23" 2-blade bronze      48.3 MPH @5,000 RPM
Quicksilver 23" 2-blade bronze      48.6 MPH @5,200 RPM
Ballistic 21" 3-blade stainless       44.8 MPH @5,000  RPM

Note: 5,000 RPM's is Ross's recommended redline.

David:
Quicksilver 23" 2-blade bronze      49.6 MPH @5,100 RPM
PowerTech 21" 3-blade stainless   46.7 MPH @4,900 RPM

Ross ended up buying my 23" bronze prop. The PowerTech prop was a disappointment. It has high rake and my setup does not like high rake as I have had poor results with Laser II's also. On prop Testing day I my three 2-bronze props were turning 50.7 - 51.7 MPH at 5,300 PRM and that prop may well be the best prop to be found on my setup.

The White Bear Lake setting is great and would be perfect for a midweek Glastron boating outing in the future.

David

So David and I got out on the water and the weather was perfect. Did some prop testing and I know he'll be posting the results. I ended up buying a 23 pitch 2 blade bronze prop from him as it gave me decent results.
We met up with Scott Bishop eventually and tooled around White Bear Lake, which I had never been on before and had a good time talking boats and just enjoying being on the water INSTEAD OF AT WORK!
I am posting some pics of course.
David, if you want any of these in higher Res, let me know and I'll email them to you. These are compressed of course.
We had a visit from a sea plane (again)

As I got there a bit early, I was hanging out and checked out the ramp etc and there was a guy dunking a cool old Chris-Craft so I had to wonder over to talk to him about it. I dont remember what year he said it was. 50's something. They were backing it in, and pulling back out, the backing it in and pulling it out again. He told me he was checking it for leaks. Apparently he is retired and this is his retirement project. Looked like it was mostly there but ALOT of work to bring that ol beauty back to new condition. I heard him tell the wife, doing the backing and forthing, that it wasnt leaking so bad!
Looked like the deck wood had been redone. The hull, lower 6 inches(?) appeared to be solid, like fiber glass. Does that sound right? Yet he said that some of the leaking was due to the wood needing to swell so I dont know why it looked solid and coated if it was wood. I dunno. Maybe an update/mod?
Said it had a 283 "vette" engine in it. He didnt run it, much to my dismay. :(
Makes working on fiberglass hulls desirable.

Sorry I'm late, what a great day!  Thanks to Ross and Dave for coming out, I had a great time and formally invite all Glastron owners to come share a day on WBL anytime. I'll be out again tomorrow actually, if anyone's free :-).. Seaplanes are always a fun addition to a day of boating.

Looks like a Perfect day on WBL! Just about had the entire day to yourselves. Impressive numbers Ross. Your engine is from the 80's right? So your 100 HP should be close to Dave's 74 115. Weight must be fairly close too.

Dave, Are those 2-blade bronze props made with the larger hub for mercruiser drives? I would be interested to see how it does on my CV16SS. I bet it would pull a few more MPH's out of Steves CV16 too.

Yeah its an 89 or 90. I havent really determined which yet. I seem to recall, looking at 89 brochures that that made both 4 and 6 cylinders in this HP range. I think it was the first year of 4 cylinder 100 hp.
According to David, I have more horsepower but he runs away from me, with pretty much any prop.
My boat is a little heavier.
I had plenty of chine walk.
My motor seems a bit noisey and I dont think the noise is new, but might be getting worse. Might be my imagination but I'd like Steve to go for a ride once and listen.

If you know the serial number this will tell you the year. If it's the first year then it's an 88.

Thanks for the link Jason. I have never seen a model listed on it anywhere. XL Sea Ray, L Sea Ray, ELPTO or EXLPTO. Looks to be an 89 however.
I had the same issue when looking for a trim tab since they never listed anything before the "C".
My serial number is O or Zero C147107. That first letter or number must be meaningless ??? ???

Dave, Are those 2-blade bronze props made with the larger hub for mercruiser drives? I would be interested to see how it does on my CV16SS. I bet it would pull a few more MPH's out of Steves CV16 too.

Jason, Ross's boat appears to be heavier than mine. When Mercury Marine changed the way of rating outboards from powerhead to propshaft, the 140 HP became the 115 HP, a 25 HP drop. My 115 maybe lost 20 HP, to a 95 HP. Hence I figured Ross's 100 HP had more HP than mine under the new rating system.

To my knowledge, Mercury only made the 2 and 3 blade bronze props for the small hub Mercurys. The bronze props were fading out by the time the larger hub V-6 Mercurys were introduced.

I have mentioned to Steve Ackermann several times that he could improve his MPH with a 2-blade Bronze over his 3-blade Rapture. He is reluctant to try the bronze because he has no tach and is running pretty high revs. His 1987 and my 1988 Mercury 115 HP should be able to run 5,700 - 5,800 RPM's for short periods of time.  Hence my 21" 2-blade bronze running 53 MPH at 5,400 RPM on the 74' Merc should go about 57 MPH at 5,800 RPM on the 88' Merc and maybe best best prop of the lot.

You and Jim are welcome to try the 2-blade bronze prop on your Mercurys.

We'll have to plan a St. Croix trip again. That was fun, even just beaching and hanging out. I did not care too much for Beanies landing for various reasons. however, I'd like to find a ramp I like but hopefully no further south.

57MPH in a V153! CRAZY!
Whats so crazy about that? Only 2.2mph faster than my best. Though I have to admit my 153 can develop a purty violent chine walk at that speed. The slightest lil wave or steering adjustment can set it off & the only remedy is to throttle back. It's always puzzled me why David appears to have far less of a problem with chine walking. Guess mebbe it's my elevated motor height? I dunno.

Fwiw I still think ya guys oughta add a Lightspeed prop to the collection. Specifically designed for small light boats. Mine is a 13 1/2 x 22 and I believe my best with that was 52.9. The 13 3/4 x 23 SRX chopper is what got me to 54.8. Mebbe rehub one of those & give it a try while your at it? I can assure you that once you get either of these props hooked up the mid-range acceleration is breathtaking.

Looks like y'all had a blast! Wish I was there ... Take care.

Doug, I had crazy chine walking but solved it by putting a sleeve/spacer in the arm that goes from the end of the rack and pinion cable to the outboard motor. I deteched play by being able to move the outboard motor from side to side. This spacer tightens up the steering system. Also on my boat, my 2-blade bronze props are not lifting the bow like your Lightspeed or SRX are doing. More of the boat is in the water. If I elevate the motor 1" or so, than the other props I have come into play - the 22" Ballistic and the 22" Mercury Chopper, the equilent to your SRX. A Laser II 22" is also a possibility, the equilent to your Lightspeed. The PowerTech PTR 21" I tested this last week is a lost cause and will be sold or returned to the place that sold it to me on an exchange basis. Propably get a PowerTech RED 3-blade 21" prop with far less rake.

Dan's prop shop in Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, sold me the PowerTech PTR in December of 2010, and has agreed to exchange it for a PowerTech RAF 21". Dan's prop shop has good prices, a good exchange program, and Dan is easy to work with.

Boat Motor Recyclers in Burnsville has a bunch of stuff. One really cool looking 4 blade Stanless 23 pitch. Don't know if it will work, but looks cool
