Title: Anyone else work on their boats today?
Post by: dorelse on March 10, 2012, 08:18:29 PM
Pulled the temporary interior out, removed the control mounting panel.

Anyone remember seeing a good reproduction source for a capacity plate?

Nope, but even though we were at Hollywood Studios in Disney World I thought about how nice it would be to boat today since it was about 78 degrees today in Orlando! Ah what an addiction we all share!

Pic taken today?... must have had some really good weather up north Jerry to be in shorts!

Hope to get some panels cut out for the CVX-20 engine box tomorrow... making removable panels for each side.  Any recommendations for paint to use in that area, to take the heat?

I just came in from getting a new to me 9.5 Johnson running. I was just talking to my dad about making a mini-CV to mount the motor on. Something along the lines of those little hydro-racer looking thingys I've seen on smaller lakes. We'll see what comes of it, the wife says go for it.

Test ran the Evinrude again yesterday after rebuilding carbs, fuel pump, impeller, re-seal lower etc.. Much better now!  Power tilt and trim test with new TM Marine switch on control lever and new solenoid in box successful.  Back to "sand and fair", "sand and fair" on the hull.  Can you tell I'm tired of "sand and fair"!?!?!?   ;D

Between yesterday and today I glassed my stringers and transome together,  bedded my transome, bedded my stringers, replaced rotten wood for the rub rail (about 3 feet on each side), replaced the wood backing for the transome tie downs, and tabbed in all the stringers. Might be more All in all, a very productive weekend.

I hooked up one of the cables (throttle) & new control box on Goldie.  Going to need to order out a new (shorter) cable for shifting.

Anyone need a Mercruiser 15 ft cable, or old Morse 11' or 13' cables & Control box?

New floor glassed into the CVX20 on Sunday.  Many thanks to Jim B & Jeff R for all their work on this project.  These are the kinda guys you want living next door to you!  ;D

That last photo was from a couple weeks ago, during the prep stage.  Jeff was pretty dusty from grinding fiberglass & old wood out of the floor, so Jim dusted him off with the leaf blower.

Now its time for new carpet, and warm weather.

Been doing a little work last Fall and Winter!!!!

1) Rebuilt back seat and side panels, too cheap to hire an upholster so I took up sewing ... going to leave the bucket seats to a professional.

2)  Installed new gauges and side mount controls.

3)  Somewhere in the last 28 years we lost the center consul, so I made a small one that will hide a ski and still be not so much in the way.

4) Added a front roller and replace a bunk.

5) Stained the wood on the back.

After all these years, I think I'm going to have to do the floor, still solid but once in a while I sense a little play.  Never even took the battery out this winter, pulled it out on Saturday and it started right up...go figure.

I did a little work on my boat today, took off the winter cover, installed the battery, and replaced a wheel hub on the trailer. I need to get a spark plug wire terminal crimping tool to redo the wire ends on my distributor. The wires came with 90* ends and it needs to have straight ones.

Nice bench seat you built. I take it the entire back lifts up and out to access under the rear deck area. I'm thinking of doing the same with mine. How did you protect the wood frame?

I am in for help Brian, just post the details.

Just working on putting some audio in mine right now (no cutting of holes though), while the boat is still 'Gutted'.  Picked up some new marine carpet at a supplier over in Brooklyn Park called Rochford Supply   -   http://www.rochfordsupply.com/ (http://www.rochfordsupply.com/)
Save a few bucks on shipping with local pickup.  They have a lot of the heavier weight marine carpets also, if you want your Glastron more 'Luxurious'.

Title: Re: Anyone else work on their boats today?

Josh, might actually be cheaper to buy new seats.  Those style lounge seats are pretty easy to find might save you time/hassle too.
Title: Re: Anyone else work on their boats today?
Post by: Bayflite73 on March 31, 2012, 06:36:52 AM
Sean, good point. The best I've found is about $180 per lounge seat which is pretty good, but don't seem to be the right style to keep it original. Of course the wood for the seats is pretty bad too so once the boxes are built and the seats are reupolstered maybe $180 and not quite original wouldn't be a bad thing. If I replace one I'll replace all so that takes it out of the budget this year what with kitchen floor issues, new gutters, etc. Probably just sew up the rips the best I can for now!

I know we've had the discussion on updating or pure original. Probably doesn't matter as long as it's not too modern!
Title: Re: Anyone else work on their boats today?

That's a tuff call Josh ...
Are your seat bases bad ?  or just the seat cushions bottoms ?
Are the rear jump seats bad ?
Steve said the green was still available, but would need extra work to sew in lines.
Dave had a local guy do his, you could get an estimate on redoing the old ones .

The seats, center console and aft pad for the Challenger were upholstered by one of Toms nieghbors.........she does a lot of car stuff I think. I liked it because it is Black vinyl with orange metelflake inserts (I was looking for that old hot rod look). I think I have her contact information if anyone is interested.
Title: Re: Anyone else work on their boats today?
Post by: Bayflite73 on March 31, 2012, 08:39:46 AM
The boxes aren't falling apart or separating from the floor or anything, they're solid, but they've definately been wet too many times for too long in her 39 years. The wood isn't moldy but is a little soft. The cushions are fine except for the drivers seat which is toast.

Staples are rusty and some have pulled out but I've restapled those already.

The jump seats are fine. I've toyed with the idea of just buying the vinyl and doing it myself, but the lines would be hard!
Title: Re: Anyone else work on their boats today?
Post by: Hyperacme on March 31, 2012, 09:22:51 AM
On my old V-156 (same seats and bottom boxes as your boat) were held to floor by angled peices of alum.,  the bottom of boxes were tapered some, as when I took them out and set them on garage floor they did not sit flat.
The wood on bottom of driver seat was starting to rot by one hinge.
My CV seat boxes are same design but have angled cut outs because of hull/floor angles.
If you redo vinyl on seats, and you can find a color that comes very close it might not look right as other seats and trim pieces could have faded over the years.

Josh,
I just ordered new seats from veada mfg, seems to have alot more vinyl than what their web site shows. Sent them a few pics of the boat and found a exact match, but there will not be any pleated vinyl. It cost me around $850 for new lounge and jump seats but they take some time to ship. Mine won't ship until April 17th.
Title: Re: Anyone else work on their boats today?
Post by: Bayflite73 on March 31, 2012, 12:28:43 PM
Brandon, good to know about veada. I saw their website this morning, but didn't stay too long as it didn't look like they would have the right colors. I'll check them out again.

Gregg: Thanks for the heads up about the seat bottoms. Mine are head on the same way. I rethought the plan as while I wish I had $800 bucks to work with I really have like $50! I think I'll take the drivers side lounge off but leave the box on the floor, take the vinyl off in one big peice, stitch the rips back together adding some sort of strengthening fabric to the underside so I'm not just relying on really old vinyl to hold the stitches together, then I'll put the peices back together. Sure you'll see the stitching and all, but it's better than plastic and foam!

Finally got to do my tear down ... complete interior removed, rub rail off, wiring disconnected in appropriate places, ready to lift off the deck ...

Rear bench was built in three pieces with enough 2x4 lumber to build a small shed.  The PO must have been really heavy-handed ... 1/3 of the screws holding this thing together were stripped and had to be drilled out.

All my wiring and new switch and main battery disconnect have arrived, so I can get busy.  I'll post pictures of the mess I uncovered - I could swear the PO left all the wires from the donor boat attached to the harness and he added his own ... he even used speaker wire (and there is no audio on the boat, save for the sound of the Mercury behind me).

Title: Re: Anyone else work on their boats today?
Post by: WetRaider on March 31, 2012, 07:49:15 PM
I knew it would be a mess ... I had a lot of trouble trying to isolate some tach trouble when I got the boat.  No telling, yet, where that speaker wire is connected on each end.  There were cut wires just hanging out.  Mixes and matches of heat shrink tubing, electrical tape, liquid electrical tape, and crimp-on butt connectors.  There are wires labeled "common ground" with terminals on the end, but not connected to anything, just limp.

The smoldering fire at the end of last season I assumed was connected to my ignition switch because when I cut the key to shut off the motor, the motor just kept running.  Key removed completely, still going.  I had to remove the fuel line to shut her down.  You can see in the photos one of the wires heated up along its whole length and melted off it's own insulation, and some of the neighboring insulation, and some of the damn split loom, too.

Reminds me of the old wiring on the V172. I don't think was tampered with since 1967 but when I had to put in the new ignition switch for the 150 I had to pull the old key. Check out the wiring on this!! I surprised I never had ha problem with it.

Oh, man.  That's a bit worse than what I discovered under the cowling last summer.  I redid the internal wire harness ... the external appears somewhat new, at least not original, but there's no plugs at the control box, so everything is hard wired.  I just bought a ton of new wire, I'm going to snip the boat side wire harness after it enters the splash well and run all new wiring.  Had to go with orange wire instead of the factory "salmon," but I should be able to solder everything in and have a nice, clean, loomed & bundled harness.

Holly cow Dan, I am amazed that you did not have smoke rolling with that much insulation melted. :o

Josh and Gregg, trust me I am really in the same position as you guys are buget wise. The only way I could afford those seats was to save all winter.

Did a little more work on the interior had the seats upholstered and installed them this weekend, got new buttons, hard to find shops that do those any more.  Trying to get it ready for Iowa next month, still want to do a little work on the engine and test a used prop that I purchased on Craigslist but the to do list is getting shorter.

Brandon, most of the enjoyment of boating is working on them, as long as my wife does not figure out how much I spend... How about last night, 4" inches of rain and just as I went to bed the sirens went off for 30 minutes and today 30 - 50 mph winds welcome to Spring....

Isn't that the truth on both parts. We only had about an 1.5" of rain and hail. I got to dodge the tornados yesterday coming home from North Platte ;D. And hey, at least it is going to only blow 10 to 20 tomorrow, so I might be able to get something done on the boat instead of buffing the ladder. :P

Well mother nature was kind to me today and let me get the rotten support board for the ladder removed. It came out like a flakey sponge. Got the new board installed, pressure treated deck board, but not glassed in, that is tomorrow nights project.

Please tell me you're not using pressure treated.

Jerry is Right, don't ever use pressure treated wood on anything in a boat you plan on glassing in, the pressure treated wood remains moist for a Long time, the fiberglass resin will Not stick to the pressure treated wood but just a short time, just a day or two, once it's sealed up with a fiberglass over-lay, it will seperate from the over-lay.  I only use kiln dried wood, cabnit grade ply, premium fir, stuff that you know don't contain any moisture.

You guys..... thanks :)) can wait to get her out into her natural habitat. Hotwired - thanks for the tip - just for me to understand - I ran it in neutral, do I still need to put water through the drive? I need to run her again as the oil drain pump (you know those vacuum pumps) leaked and couldn't get all the oil out so I there it back in and will try to seal the crack in the bottom.

Oh man that sounds great!  Get some water in that drive though!!  Those bearings do not last long if run dry!

Jerry, Red,  It was an older piece of pressure treated wood around 7+ years old.

Yes, you have to get water in the pump.  Neutral, forward or reverse.  There is no clutch in that thing.  If the engine is running the pump is turning.  Engine RPM = pump RPM at all times.  Shifting from neutral to forward or reverse just is a matter of the gate opening and closing at the rear of the pump.  Bearing kits are not overly expensive but replacing them is a bear!  I start and run mine out of the water too but only to get it to fire and run for 5 or 10 seconds if I can help it.  There is no good way to get enough water into the pump to cool it effectively short of putting the boat in a tank or the lake/river.  Some have made a diverter for a hose that will spray up into the pump or a tee in the intake line from the pump to the engine which helps a little but still does not get enough water in the pump to cool the bearings well.

Thanks for the advice! I was thinking of making a tee for being able to quickly being able to flush the engine when needed, but I'll look for a better setup as you explained. Don't want to change those bearings yet! ;) I need to run it one more time to heat up the oil when I fixed the vacuum pump.

By the way - will you take your CV-21 or CV-27 for a spin soon?
