"Attaboy" for digging in Gregg, your boat is definitely worth the time/effort/expense in the long run IMO. Are you doing transom, stringers, and floor or what's the plan?
-
Floor doesnt look bad except for the part in the back.
-
Gregg, is it a winter project or just getting started to pick it up in the spring? Going to do the transom also? Believe you also did a floor and stringer job on a previous boat you had.
We missing you on the Red Wing to Alma trip last Sunday.
-
After I get it ripped apart I'll know more ...
-
Nightmare Day #2 ...
Got the rest of the carpet out ... Most have been a mouse urinal for the past 30 years .... P. U. !
I have to dig around a little more, but think side wood (picture # 3) is apart of hull/deck/floor and flotation foam box is behind it.
Floor is not rotted beyond splashwell and stringer is wrapped in glass and solid, but small boards that form drain bowl are almost gone (picture #4 & #5) !
No rot on lower transom, it's glassed but haven't checked motor mount holes.
Found a beer can under fuel tank and lotta leafs ...
Think I have an idea on how to get motor off with a come-a-long but thats for another day ...
Jason ... ya still have the Merc motor lift eye thingy ?

Shawn
You were talking about using a wire brush on your grinder to remove old carpet glue from your floor ...
Is this what your talking about ?
-
Gregg, I have everything you need to pull that motor off. Just let me know when you want it. You are welcome to my engine hoist too. I will be doing my carpet too within the next couple weeks. So take lots of notes for me! Home Depot and Menards surprisingly have a lot of nice cheap choices for marine carpet. Even green!
-
Thank you Jason ...
I'll take ya up on the offer !
Would like to pull motor off, check for rot around mounting holes, plug old mounting holes, put in new splashwell drain & transom tuffener thingy to cover old motor mount scars.
I haven't even looked at carpet yet ... LOL
-
Gregg, I may be able to help you with the outboard motor to transom hardware/transom support selection as I went through it with the '88 Merc 115.
-
Got a HF multi tool and started cutting/trimming/hacking ...
Was hoping for a quick rear floor fix ... BUT ... aint happening ...
The hole for the speedo pilot tube wasn't sealed, maybe from day one or maybe after new motor was installed (about 1989 or 90) !
It's soft from tube hole down to bottom of transom, thought there would be rot around holes but it's shot !
Pulled wood out with just my hand and could have got more but battery is in the way ...
Abondoning "Plan A" and going to "Plan B" .... Just have to figure out what Plan B is now ... LOL

If my luck held out ... Could have had her cleaned up and ready to glass this weekend, the multi-tool makes quick work of glass and wood ...
Also forgot how much fiberglass itches !
-
You gonna split the hull now Gregg?
-
Yep
Not lookin' forward to it ...
Or ...
Half ars it and get the one in Cannon falls ...
-
Except with that one you will have just as many hours into buffing as you will into transom on the one you already have.
http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/dak/boa/3274476912.html (http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/dak/boa/3274476912.html)
-
Gregg, keep the one you have! It has a lot more class!
-
Gregg, keep up the good, hard work. It will become clearer what route to take.
-
His has no holes in deck (radio, ski bar mounts) and hull is like new (mine has keel ground down to fiberglass) ...
His has a a new floor and good transom ( he got supplys from the composit place in Mpls, you got your stuff from and he restores Ski-Doo's so knows a thing or two about fiberglass) .
His windshield is good, his dash and seats are bad but mine are OK so change good stuff on mine for his.
Buffing is easy and cheap compared to transom and floor ...
Just don't wanna spend $6000 on a boat thats only worth $3000 ...
Just thinking out loud ...
Not sure what to do now ...
-
Just don't wanna spend $6000 on a boat thats only worth $3000 ...
LOL
I think we've all been there.
-
You have a good point there!
-
Just don't wanna spend $6000 on a boat thats only worth $3000 ...
What's wrong with that plan?
-
Ok...in all seriousness...if I could have spent $1k (cuz you'll sell the Force)...and bypassed all the dust, resin, hard work, etc, etc...I'd have done it in a New York minute.
-
Sorry to see things took a turn for the worse on your CV Gregg, that's an ugly mess on the transom. (Good thing you pulled her down when you did!) Decision time for sure. Glad you've got a great support group up there to back you up whichever way you decide to go.
I'd hate to abandon your beautiful CV, but Doran has an excellent point. The guy in CF is "asking" price posted, maybe cash on the table would soften the price a little? AND you'd have his trailer, your project boat, plus the Force to sell to recoup some of the cost. Add the other "plus" points you mentioned, I think I know which way I'd go, but it's your call.
Good luck my friend.
-
Just don't wanna spend $6000 on a boat that's only worth $3000 ...
Bad attitude.
-
Gregg,
I am no expert on this, but you thought that transome on your boat was solid.
Do you know the guy selling the boat? If not, you realy don't know what you getting.
If the other boat is what you say it is "with everything fixed" get it and make one good one from two and sell the spare parts.
Or donate the boat and get a write off at the end of the year.
Just my 2.1 cents.
Igor
-
Well, you seem to like buffing. I say buy the donor and sell the force and trailer and you will AT LEAST break even.
-
Just don't wanna spend $6000 on a boat that's only worth $3000 ...
Bad attitude.
Hah hah hah!!! Yeah with an attitude like that you've got no business messin around with old Glastrons. Good one Jerry. Hee hee hee
I'll tell what's worse: Spending 4K on a boat that might be worth a grand, and then destroying it against a channel marker. Talk about "loss of return" on your investment ...!
Oh well. I dunno Jason, I kinda agree with Igor. Stay focused on the task at hand. Your hull is beautiful Gregg, and you've already begun the resto. Why take on another potential nightmare?
My 2.125 cents.
-
Still thinking and listening to all ideas and opinions ...
-
How is the rest of the transome?
Is that the only area that's rotted out? If it is, cut out an insert and apoxy it in.. or close it and inject it with epoxy.
Once the floor is in and glassed it will be rigid again. Or you can add a few knee braces connected to the floor and transome as well.
It's labor intensive but not expensive.
-
The transom is strong, I can grab motor and bounce on it with my full weight ...
That's got me thinking ...
If I left boat with bad transom and floor cut out I don't think it would sell or if it did, wouldn't be worth beans ...
If I did a half ars job I couldn't sell it saying it had a good rebuilt transom ... I guess I could but I wouldn't !
Doing it right is labor intensive but shouldn't cost that much ... Maybe ...
More thinking ...
-
Hey Gregg. You have a beautiful boat. I'm not there looking at it myself, but honestly didn't look that bad from your pics. You said the transom was strong. Needs a patch, give it a patch, that's not necessarily a half ars job. I had a similar decision to make on my GT-150 and decided the transom was "good enough" to last my life time with good care, so I didn't replace it... saved a bundle and some headache. From my experience, I understand it always seems worse when you are close to the problem. But then again, another boat always seems better from afar. Have you seen, poked and prodded the other one yourself?... may not be as good as it seems, and they seldom are.
Just my 2 pennies.
-
" Have you seen, poked and prodded the other one yourself?... may not be as good as it seems, and they seldom are. "
I'm thinking the same thing ...
He said there was some rot around steering mount bolt holes on transom ...
Could be more ...
-
Yeah Gregg, you could patch it like I did with mine. (I used a pour in transom product.)

-
Looks like someone made up your mind for you. For now anyway.
Terry
-
Do you have a before picture, after old rotted wood was removed but before patch ...
-
Ok, then I'd vote for fixing what you've got.
-
Plan B is not an option now ...
For Sale: 1976 Carlson Glastron CV-16 with 125HP Force (SOLD)
-
Isn't it funny how fate works!
-
Just saw that...looks like your mind has been made up for you!
-
No more thinkin' ...
Now it's time for DOIN' !
... LOL
-
That does not look like fun. if you plan on keeping it forever, you're going to feel better knowing you did a good job on it even if its a patch. If the rest is solid, why tear it all out, unless you suspect there is more rot then by the tube entry. That would widdle down the decisions to at least 2. Replace the whole thing or sell it and like you said, there arent many that will buy it or pay you anything with it like that.
-
I'm gonna have to fix "LOTS AND LOTS" of computers to pay for this ... LOL
-
I would not hesitate fixing that boat, you have done so much work, it's well worth the time and energy.
I would lend a hand but I'm in Nebraska, you can't put a price on fun...if only my wife knew how much I've spent over the years...
-
Gregg,
I am one of the newest members on this form, I never worked on fixing an outboard, replacing stringers or getting a boat to run over 55mph.
However, i did restore a 1976 O'day Mariner to better then new condition never having any experience doing it. (I did have a lot of comunication with O'day Maniner form members to get it done)
But with help/support of people who have done it, it makes the job easyer.
We all learn from each other. Don't give up on it, get done and document the process as you go along. All of us who will do the same with our boat will appreciate your efforts and help of all the forum members who have gone through the pain working on their project.
This was the result of weeks and weeks of labor restoring the Mariner.

Verry nice, I've always wanted to try to sail...
-
Igor
" But with help/support of people who have done it, it makes the job easyer."
I've done it before ... That's why I'm wineing like a little girl about it .... LOL
Nice work on the O'Day ... Looks SWEET !
-
LOL
Point well taken " wineing like a little girl"
I will be be doing the same when I cut mine open and see something I didn't expect.
-
UPDATE ... Finally !
Upper right corner was rotted and came out by hand in first picture.
You can also see how wet it is to the left of rotted corner.
Resin plate is hanging out half way on this side ( 2ed pic, dark gray stuff)
I still have a long way to go ....

-
Floatation boxes to blame for that? Beginning to look like a patch isn't going to do the job now.
-
Gregg, do not feel pressured into a deadline for finishing your CV16. Do a good job no matter how long it takes. There are people in our Glastron group (including myself) to share trip boat rides with.
-
Kind of weird ...
Foam was bone dry, top of wood was wrapped in fiberglass, there is a void behind that part of the transom where the outer transom glass doesn't touch wood ...
Condensation ?
Very damp/wet on this side, which makes it hard to cut wood ...
And this is the easy part, wood between splash well and hull will be a challenge ...
-
"Gregg, do not feel pressured into a deadline for finishing your CV16"
No .. not really ...
First time out last season was with Jason on White Bear Lake.
It's cool seeing how other G/C rider/handle ..
I'm to laided back / lazy to feel pressure !
-
Besides, I am pretty sure you can and will get some help. I'll do what I can but my plate has gotten rather full in the last week or so. Maybe need to plan a weekend and get a few of us over there? Maybe too cramped for more the one body but sometimes it just takes a little moral support.
-
" Maybe too cramped for more the one body "
It's to cramped for just me !
Now that the weathers warmed up a bit, I'll put a few hours a night after work in ...
I'll " call in the troops " when I'm ready to pull the deck ...
-
You're still going to pull the deck? Then why are you abusing yourself by laying under the spash well?
-
The wood has to come out ...
Wouldn't be any better with the deck off ...
Wouldn't be any worse ether !
-
Got some work done today ...
Boat out of corner ... Rub rails off, rear trim pieces off, most of transom wood out .
I think I'm gonna remove windshield .. Just in case it twists and cracks ( more ) when deck is removed ...
I think deck is glassed to hull ... more cuttin' !

Looks good Gregg. Must have been cold in the garage. Will hardly look like the boat you purchased when you are done.
-
Yo Gregg. Bag'n tag everything! Take lotsa notes & lotsa pics.
Cuz even if you think you'll member later how it went together? Ya might fergit ...
-
HECK ...
I even tagged the rub rails ...
-
I think I'm gonna remove windshield .. Just in case it twists and cracks ( more ) when deck is removed ...
Smart thinking! How do you plan to lift the top half off? Gonna call mike over from across the street to heft it?
Need the picker again?
-
I'm thinking ... Roll the boat out of the garage, put two 2X4's under deck and get some help to lift and set in garage.
Though about putting it in the corner, but it would be in the way ... At least if it's in Carols parking spot she'll want me to get it done FAST !
Still a bunch to do before deck comes off ...
-
Gregg if your roof joists are exposed maybe you can hang it from them. Although I can understand where that might make you a little nervous. Good idea to take the windshield off.
-
Yes that would be nice if you could hang it from the ceiling. Out of the way and not outside. Maybe hang it over the war depts parking space. At least you wouldnt be working under it this way. ;D
-
Greg
Me, Jess and my Neighbors Brian and Sara carried the top half of the 23 out of my garage. It was not very heavy I just slid some 2x3 under the deck so we had something to hold on to. You could just do that and then pull it up to the ceiling so it is out of the way. I have a come along you can borrow. Or just use some rope and a couple pulleys.
-
let me know if you need a hand too. I like the idea of hanging it from the ceiling too.
-
Gregg
I pulled the top off of my GT 150 used 4 ratcheting straps hook into the ceiling and down to the cleats. Worked up each one little by little.
I am like you no help in the house had to do it alone.
-
The decks length would interfere with the garage door opening so Carol couldn't use garage, unless I hung it in the corner and that would just be more work ... Garage ceiling is sheet rocked ...
Told Carol what was going to happen and she just said "OK ... Why didn't you get a good boat that doesn't need all this work " ...
LOL !
Got most of the (transom) wood out and I think (after prying) that wood between resin plate has "let loose" ... Maybe ...
Wednesday I'll start on removing steering, wind shield, fuel tank and other stuff ...
-
Do you have to remove the steering? I believe all that should come off with the top unless you are planning on replacing it with a nfb steering.
Or maybe a dual setup.
-
BayStar˙hydraulic steering ...
http://www.teleflexmarine.com/products/hydraulic-new/outboard-new/baystar/ (http://www.teleflexmarine.com/products/hydraulic-new/outboard-new/baystar/)
Think I'm gonna have to turn deck over to grind down the splash well, where it tabs to transom.
-
Deck is ready to come off ...
except for one front deck support ...
