Author Topic: 305 dies...Time for a upgrade (Read 8047 times)

Had the boat out today... This time lost oil pressure and she got hot fast. I heard valve tapping, and that is what made me look at all the gauges. I shut her off and got towed back. This 305 is done. I will be putting a 350 back in it. If the 350 that Steve has checks out good then I will swap all of the external parts over and be on the water again. If It doesn't check out the best then I'll will probably getting it anyway and doing a rebuild on it.

Sorry to hear the ol' 305 went out on ya, man! Especially after all the work you've done

But let's be honest, a 350 or 383 will really make your boat move. Seeing Jeff's in action is very impressive, and he built his using relatively mild, extremely reliable performance parts. I hope Steve's 350 checks out - good luck with the swap.

Well, I would have rather not spend the money right now on a engine swap because of the money I already spent and other projects going on. But I am not upset about this too much. The way I'm looking at this is (Oh darn time for a bigger engine) haha

I hear ya. Would have been better if it was your choice to do at a given time.

More torque and HP with the same footprint and no additional weight. What's not to like about that! Craig maybe you've already seen this, but here's the marketing literature for the first CVX18 to be graced w/350 in the engine bay. Called the "California Special".

Steves 350 checked out good! Tore it down, pulled the pistons, honed the cylinders. It was already bored .040 over. Crank is beautiful. That was ground .010 under at one point. So I bought new complete gasket set. Pulled the 305 out of the CVX and swap all external parts over needed. One week later The 350 is In the CVX!

I ran it today and seems like it runs strong! In a week I will be going up to the lake. I'm am very excited to see how she runs.

wish you woulda had time to come out on the river today, I'd like to see how she runs with all that extra power! like I said the other night, looks like you'll be prop shopping now. but there are a few here that can probably point you in the right direction. you are welcome to run my Bravo prop and see how that does. if my CSS motor turns out to be an easy fix, I think it may work well on there too.

if you wanna test run it at the river some evening this week, let me know, I'll come out and tail ya...

Wow, that was fast! Good work. Boy do I feel like a "slug" sometimes.

I had motivation to get it done. I am going camping at Raystown Lake for a week. I wanted my boat up there.

. I will probably pull it out this winter to paint it. I didn't have time to do any sort of dressing it up before i put it in. I was just focused on having a running boat for this season.

Nice work Craig, and not to take anything away from that, but it just goes to show you what a "no-brainer" it is to replace a dead 305 w/350. Enjoy the torque, that's what boats need to perform and before you even hit 10 MPH you'll notice the night and day difference the first time you hammer the throttle.

Yeah I'm excited to get it on the water up there. Right now I need to adjust my shift cables. It never seemed correct. So i'll see if I can get it adjusted. I'm trying to do it by the book. But doesn't seem to be going that smooth as it says.

yeah, can't remember if we discussed this before, but the linkage where the lower connects is a little sloppy on that, had an issue getting everything lined up when I put an impeller kit in it. managed to get it where it was kinda in the middle, so it wasn't revving before going into forward or reverse... if you get it set there, you'll be fine!

Just got back from a week at the lake. The 350 seems to run well. However I'm pretty sure the carb needs rebuilt plus I have a oil leak somewhere. So looks like the engine will be pulled again to find that leak. Other then those issues it was a fun week. Sounds great and will run quicker once I have the carb rebuilt and tuned in, along with the right prop. I only was able to get it up to 58mph according to my speedo. That was with a 21 pitch.

Well, it was a scramble to get it done for the lake, and a gamble on that carb, but it sounds like it was worth it! At least you got a good week in, and a respectable speed, which I'm sure was fun. I'll talk to you this weekend and get the details, curious if it was letting you rev out or if the carb was holding it back... Also curious how the rpm's compared to the 305 with the 19. Guess it's hard to tell how the Mirage prop really did until it's tuned in. Glad you had a good vacation, guess since it's not running at peak you won't be at the river this weekend? I'm heading to the camper tomorrow afternoon, so I'll be there tomorrow night and all Sunday if you wanna come out and play...

. I will not be out tonight. I want take a look closer and see if I can't find that oil leak. I would like to fix that before I take it back on the water.
