We started the prop testing at 10:30 AM on White Bear Lake. The skies were sunny, just a gentle breeze, and few boats. It was Ross's first time out this year, and my second time. Scott showed up later and we all parked in a bay with the three boats tied together and talked. Scott left for work about 3:30 and Ross and I left at 5 PM. A leasurely and relaxing day. The prop tests are as follows (all GPS recorded):

Ross:

Solas 19" 3-blade aluminum          41.8 MPH @5,000 RPM
Quicksilver 21" 2-blade bronze      45.6 MPH @5,000 RPM
Quicksilver 23" 2-blade bronze      48.3 MPH @5,000 RPM
Quicksilver 23" 2-blade bronze      48.6 MPH @5,200 RPM
Ballistic 21" 3-blade stainless       44.8 MPH @5,000  RPM

Note: 5,000 RPM's is Ross's recommended redline.

David:
Quicksilver 23" 2-blade bronze      49.6 MPH @5,100 RPM
PowerTech 21" 3-blade stainless   46.7 MPH @4,900 RPM

Ross ended up buying my 23" bronze prop. The PowerTech prop was a disappointment. It has high rake and my setup does not like high rake as I have had poor results with Laser II's also. On prop Testing day I my three 2-bronze props were turning 50.7 - 51.7 MPH at 5,300 PRM and that prop may well be the best prop to be found on my setup.

The White Bear Lake setting is great and would be perfect for a midweek Glastron boating outing in the future.

So David and I got out on the water and the weather was perfect. Did some prop testing and I know he'll be posting the results. I ended up buying a 23 pitch 2 blade bronze prop from him as it gave me decent results.
We met up with Scott Bishop eventually and tooled around White Bear Lake, which I had never been on before and had a good time talking boats and just enjoying being on the water INSTEAD OF AT WORK!
I am posting some pics of course.
David, if you want any of these in higher Res, let me know and I'll email them to you. These are compressed of course.
We had a visit from a sea plane (again)

As I got there a bit early, I was hanging out and checked out the ramp etc and there was a guy dunking a cool old Chris-Craft so I had to wonder over to talk to him about it. I dont remember what year he said it was. 50's something. They were backing it in, and pulling back out, the backing it in and pulling it out again. He told me he was checking it for leaks. Apparently he is retired and this is his retirement project. Looked like it was mostly there but ALOT of work to bring that ol beauty back to new condition. I heard him tell the wife, doing the backing and forthing, that it wasnt leaking so bad!
Looked like the deck wood had been redone. The hull, lower 6 inches(?) appeared to be solid, like fiber glass. Does that sound right? Yet he said that some of the leaking was due to the wood needing to swell so I dont know why it looked solid and coated if it was wood. I dunno. Maybe an update/mod?
Said it had a 283 "vette" engine in it. He didnt run it, much to my dismay. :(
Makes working on fiberglass hulls desirable.

Sorry I'm late, what a great day!  Thanks to Ross and Dave for coming out, I had a great time and formally invite all Glastron owners to come share a day on WBL anytime. I'll be out again tomorrow actually, if anyone's free :-).. Seaplanes are always a fun addition to a day of boating.

I love this club and I'm so glad we can meet up to boat. Thanks guys!!

Looks like a Perfect day on WBL! Just about had the entire day to yourselves. Impressive numbers Ross. Your engine is from the 80's right? So your 100 HP should be close to Dave's 74 115. Weight must be fairly close too.

Dave, Are those 2-blade bronze props made with the larger hub for mercruiser drives? I would be interested to see how it does on my CV16SS. I bet it would pull a few more MPH's out of Steves CV16 too.

Yeah its an 89 or 90. I havent really determined which yet. I seem to recall, looking at 89 brochures that that made both 4 and 6 cylinders in this HP range. I think it was the first year of 4 cylinder 100 hp.
According to David, I have more horsepower but he runs away from me, with pretty much any prop.
My boat is a little heavier.
I had plenty of chine walk.
My motor seems a bit noisey and I dont think the noise is new, but might be getting worse. Might be my imagination but I'd like Steve to go for a ride once and listen.

Ross,

If you know the serial number this will tell you the year. If it's the first year then it's an 88.

Thanks for the link Jason. I have never seen a model listed on it anywhere. XL Sea Ray, L Sea Ray, ELPTO or EXLPTO. Looks to be an 89 however.
I had the same issue when looking for a trim tab since they never listed anything before the "C".
My serial number is O or Zero C147107. That first letter or number must be meaningless ??? ???

Dave, Are those 2-blade bronze props made with the larger hub for mercruiser drives? I would be interested to see how it does on my CV16SS. I bet it would pull a few more MPH's out of Steves CV16 too.

Jason, Ross's boat appears to be heavier than mine. When Mercury Marine changed the way of rating outboards from powerhead to propshaft, the 140 HP became the 115 HP, a 25 HP drop. My 115 maybe lost 20 HP, to a 95 HP. Hence I figured Ross's 100 HP had more HP than mine under the new rating system.

To my knowledge, Mercury only made the 2 and 3 blade bronze props for the small hub Mercurys. The bronze props were fading out by the time the larger hub V-6 Mercurys were introduced.

I have mentioned to Steve Ackermann several times that he could improve his MPH with a 2-blade Bronze over his 3-blade Rapture. He is reluctant to try the bronze because he has no tach and is running pretty high revs. His 1987 and my 1988 Mercury 115 HP should be able to run 5,700 - 5,800 RPM's for short periods of time.  Hence my 21" 2-blade bronze running 53 MPH at 5,400 RPM on the 74' Merc should go about 57 MPH at 5,800 RPM on the 88' Merc and maybe best best prop of the lot.

You and Jim are welcome to try the 2-blade bronze prop on your Mercurys.

The V-153 should be able to handle it as long as I don't hit rough water. Boat balances great at 53 MPH.
