This is why we need to make things in the USA again...
« on: April 16, 2013, 07:08:13 PM »
I bought 2 new plugs today...I'll be taking them back tomorrow.  Why does there need to be any lead in this thing?

I think that there should be a sign at the CA boarder that says CA is known to cause cancer in CA.  Have you noticed everything causes cancer in CA.

I agree with what you said as well.
I think this has become an addiction.

We actually lived in CA.

IMO, nothing wrong with them err'ing on the side of caution when it comes to toxic chemicals...I loved living there.

I suppose its possible that it is 49-state compliant, and CA makes them put the tag on it?

That's how they get rid of all their toxic waste. Ship it here. At my previous employer, we used a lot of plastic electrical connectors and plugs and that crap had lead and (or) other toxins, in them too. Why? Who knows!

And I agree, I'd rather have it labeled then not such as CA does.

There is lead in brass. There is less lead in lead-free brass.

Lead makes the brass easier to machine.

There is lead in brass. There is less lead in lead-free brass.

Is that true? I didn't know that...I suppose that's what makes brass soft & easy to shape?

Ok, maybe it isn't such a big deal then...

Like John said, the small percentage of lead is to improve machineability. There is lead in all kinds of stuff that's why Mom always said to wash your hands before eating.

California sued the key manufacturers over the lead content in the keys you have in your pocket. 1.5% was okay, but 2.0% has to be labeled.

There is nothing wrong with limiting our exposure to lead, but it's not something that I'm very concerned about.

Brass is an alloy of lead and copper. Leadfree brass is not brass. Like Jerry says, don't suck on it. You'll be fine.

Brass is an alloy of Copper and Zinc. Lead is present in small percentages to improve machinability. "lead free" brass isn't neccessarily lead free, just under .25%, but it is still brass.
