Getting ready!
« on: April 05, 2013, 07:04:51 PM »
We've had much warmer weather than you guys in the Northland.  I expect to be mowing in a couple weeks...

Anyway, making progress...dash is done, though still need the depth finder.  Working on the fuse block now.  Then its onto the tank & steering cable/helm replacement...that will officially mean I'll have been through every single system on the boat...which is good...cuz I've had it!  :D

"cuz I've had it!"  I've said that a few times, with car body work and boats.

Nice, Doran.
Too bad the clouds and cold wind blew in tonight.  We ate dinner at Honey Creek and had hoped for the patio after all the sunshine, but no luck.
Can we get some spring in here already?

Jeff, I love snow.  I really do.  But April is too late.  Keep that snow 'til next winter.

Ok, got all the gauges hooked up, then decided to switch everything over to LED's:

I think the LED's brighten the gauges up a bit more (its still lit a bit uneven, but its better & brighter).  I had to wire up my own lighting for the dual gauge, I think it looks pretty good!

They're in MO, I think my grand total was $14.00 shipped.  You just plug in the LED bulbs in the existing twist in socket and you're set.

How did you determine the Base type?
What intensity did you go with, for comparison.
Do they have any pigtail wires on them or just a terminal?

Well, I knew that I had Wedge bulbs in the twist/lock base (the plastic twist in housing), so I just needed to find bulbs that would fit.

Here's what I purchased...the old bulbs had the number printed on them, and I just found a compatible match.  Notice the 'Replaces Stock Bulb' list...

http://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/instrument-cluster-gauge/194-led-bulb-1-led-wedge-base/197/

The Tach gauge is a different type of housing though, so I ended up soldering up wire leads to the bulb, hollowing out the press/fit bulb housing, mounting the bulb in it, and then connecting those wires up to the rest of the wires.  (It honestly took longer to type that...)

You can order pigtails for them if you need to...that's what I did for the dual gauge that I added lighting to.

Yeah, check them out Ross.  You can order the complete housing & bulb too, but I figured why order that, when I really just need the bulb.  I saved the old bulbs (and 1 of the new ones) as on-board spares...just in case...but the LED's should out live me.

Here's the complete bulb & housing:

Oh so you didn't even have to change sockets? I'm liking it better all the time.

those look nice, and are a great price...
its hard to tell from the pix, but if they were too bright, or uneven you could add more series resistance to some to dim them down some.
a normal led draws about 20ma with a 2v across it, so the normal dropping resistor is about 500 ohms., you could add another 500 to dim them down some.
when i redid my indicator lights i used a much larger resistor cuz they were way too bright.
when i get power on mine i just may make that same upgrade you did.

Nope,  plug and play.   I suppose I should make it sound like I performed some miracle to make it work...but they were in in about 5 mins...
