Don't you hate it when that happens ...?
« on: July 29, 2013, 05:46:22 PM »
Looks like I won't be boating for awhile. My petulant cylinder #4 threw a real tantrum & appears to've swallowed a ring, or reed mebbe. Though I'm leaning toward ring. Further autopsy required ...

Man!!!? Y'know, the old saying is true: "They always run really good right before they blow up."

On the bright side the ported '78 140 block is down @ CNR Marine getting bead blasted. And having that eroded area on the base built up. Oughta have it home sometime soon.

For that matter the cylinder wall on this one looks okay so it shouldn't be that big of a deal to stick a new piston in. Theoretically ...

Upon further inspection The cylinder doesn't look badly scored at all, mosta the ring musta went outa the exhaust purty quick. So an overbore might not be necessary?

In that spirit I ran over to Ernies Dockside this afternoon and rummaged through his junk pile. Look at this lil gem I unearthed: Std bore piston in decent shape. WooHoo!

A couple of rings & I'm good to go ...  Yeah don't I wish it was that easy. Me'n Bobby Beer were gonna tear her down this evening but the rain came, so it'll have to wait til tomorrow.

Seems like there has been a lot of bad "luck" going around this year.

Ehh I dunno, kinda comes with the territory? I'm convinced the problems I've been having with this particular motor are due to the fact it sat for so long before resurrection. There's no other logical explanation.

Then again I don't *Censored* around with these old relics cuz I'm tryin to save money. Well okay mebbe I am. But gettin them runnin right means a lot more to me than that.

Hmm. Will "passing gas" or "breaking wind" make it past the censors?

It's those NGK iridium spark plugs and fully synthetic oil you use. Switch to the Champion QL77JC4 spark plugs and Mercury Quicksilver Premium Plus oil and your motor will last forever. LOL.

Could be headed in a different direction now. 'Membered my buddy Mark has a '86 90 with some ignition problem(s) he couldn't figger out. He'n Bobby Beer were monkeying around with it, then Mark stumbled upon & stole a 19' Larson w/140 looper from some old widow.

Anyway he's willing to let the 90 go cheap. So the plan is to run up to his house & check compression. If it looks okay we're gonna load her up & bring her home.

Bein a '86 means it's prop rated, of course. Which also means it has the larger, higher, ports. Which in turn means I kin bolt my carbs & exhaust on and have 140 @ the prop. Hopin it works out.

But first I gots to gets busy and build me another motor stand, or two. Gots my chop saw'n plenty of 2 be 4 down at the shop. Guess I could hang a motor on the Carlson temporarily? But that just wouldn't be right ...

ps. Here's an easy to read plan for building a motor stand:

Doug, I've got plenty of 2x4's but I don't think that stand is big enough to hang my motor on.

Ya I don't think it'd be quite heavy duty enough for yer motor GJ ...

Anyway here's the finished product: Nice not to have to spend any dinero on wood, and I already had screws. Even had the casters layin around.

Plan is to yank the 140 tonight'n hang it on the stand. Then run up to Marks in the morning, haul his boat down here'n pull the 90, and hang it on the Baja. Theoretically ...
