120/140 power steering install
« on: September 18, 2013, 07:59:16 PM »
Got the majority of my parts for Phoenix Rising's power steering upgrade. So, it was a nice evening to go out side and test fit for the pump. It clears the hood with ease! So now I have a question, (and I doubt many of us have seen a 120/140 with power steering) where do I hook into to get a water supply for the cooler? And would it return back into the riser?

The reason I am asking is none of the parts breakdowns are any help and there really isn't any information out there either.
So any ideas or info would be great. Thanks

The cooler goes in-line with the engine water inlet hose that runs from the transom to the thermostat housing. You may need to adapt the hose to fit on the cooler if the hose diameter isn't large enough.

The power steering hoses that go through the cooler are usually the low pressure -or- return line that flows from the steering cylinder back to the pump.

Thanks Rich! I was thinking something along that line, but probably a lot more complicated. Now I just need a pre alpha actuator.

I have a couple of the pre-alpha steering systems you can have them if you want to pay shipping, just let me know what you need, or all of it.

Got the correct hardware at work this week to mount the pump. So this afternoon I got the pump and tensioner bracket installed. Then I ran into a problem my front engine mount stud is too tall I could not get the water pump pulley for the power steering installed. So I decided to take the top nut loose and cut it off to a height that would work. So now that the pump and pulley are installed I have run into another minor problem, my original water pump belt is now too long. So now it is time to use the old string trick for measuring belts and go check out my local farm supply store and maybe go see what there is in stock out at work tomorrow and if I strike out there i will be heading to my local Napa on monday.

I got my string measurements done and the belts ordered today. I just need to order the hose that goes from the cooler to the pump and the mounting bracket for the cooler, hopefully I will get that done tomorrow. Then I should have everything I need once the package from Red arrives to finish the upgrade.

Well Sunday did not happen, after visually comparing the transom plate in Phoenix Rising to the one Red sent me with the ram I will need to make a custom transom plate to accommodate the power steering cylinder. The reason for this is the steering cable is mounted below the steering arm from the gimbal housing, and the ram needs to be above it to work properly.

So now the hunt is on for a cheap 4 cylinder transom plate.

I'm really surprized the transom plate I sent you won't bolt right up to the gimbal housing you have, but I'm always open to learn something, I thought all those plates were the same from early 70's thru 1983, I think, when the alpha came out.  I'll send you money back.

I'm confused by this...any pictures?  My steering cable goes into the steering assembly, above the ram, which is above the steering arm, and then the ram is connected to the steering arm via the port side...how is yours different?

Here is what the 4 cylinder plate looks like. the cable is below the steering arm. So what I need to do is get another 4 cylinder plate and cut the top section off where the steering arm comes through and have the top section welded on from the plate I got from Red.

that shield looks wider than 11 1/2 " between the bolt holes  ?
Measure center to center the bolt holes where the bell housing sits on the transom shield
as far as I know the early models were about 11 1/2 " and the later models are 9 1/2 "
what I'm thinking is that the studs / bolts from the gimbal housing, thru the transom are the same as all the other mr series, that both thansom shields should bolt right up ?

When I switched from the merc 140 to the merc 888 the transom hole was the same except for the two bolts in the middle bottom, I had to drill two new holes and seal up the old ones. The other holes matched up fine.

I believe the bolt pattern is the same between the two plates, the difference is between the engine mounting points. The 120/140 plate is wider at the mounts to accommodate the exhaust tube going to the gimbal.
