What year/value is my tower of power?
« on: November 13, 2013, 05:24:41 AM »

What would be a fair price for my motor with the damage shown and no prop? Can I determine the motor's year by the serial?

The blue stripe covers were used on '82 & '83 Towers. They also had the external trim cylinders with the pump inside the boat. I have the same on my '70 V176. The '84 & '85 engines had brown/tan stripes and the trim unit was relocated as a self contained unit mounted under the engine between the mounting brackets.

If she runs perfect, good compression, ect, I would say 1200-1500.

That damage is not bad and I wouldn't think would hurt the value too much. Could be repaired for pretty cheap.

Dave P (the other Dave P) showed me a little trick that work's very good ...
Get some Merc  spray paint, spray a small amount on a piece of card board/wood/plastic, get a match stick or small paint brush and dap on paint chips/scratch's , let dry for a day or two, then wax area gentle.
Works GREAT !  Unless you know where the chip was it's hard to tell it's been repaired ...

Looks like a newer style gear case ..
Did the busted scag/lower fin happen in the accident ?

Find model year by serial number ...

Check with David CVX-16.  He did a skeg replacement on an 88.  Not counting the professional paint, he can tell you how much.  Is your prop and LU gears OK?  The books I have show all the same decals 80 thru 83 except the 80 might have gold pin stripes top and bottom.  I put 80 decals on my 70. Go here to match SN:
http://www.marineengine.com/mfr/mercury_models.html
80-81 4112635 beginning numbers; 82 4310785; 83 4567952.
I noticed Max Rules show a great difference in SNs.  Hope you figure it out.
82 did away with the 140 because it became a 115 prop shaft rated.  I'm guessing you may have that one since it performs so well. High comp; premium burner until around 85.
Saw one (1988) in Iowa this year for $1200.

Also an old post on Iboats (81 Glastron Carlson C-500 Replacement Seats by Dreamfinder needed seats your color)
And Crebb whom I mentioned earlier has a Blue restore C-500.

You can fix that small chunk taken out by the transom saver for about $10. Sand the area, mix up som JB Weld and tape on a little form to hold the JB and let it dry for two days. Sand down to match and shoot with some fresh paint. Never know it was there.

Right but you still have to weld on a new skeg.  Here's Iboats page for Mercury SNs.  It seems to agree with Maxrules. I believe Marine Engine.com is in error.

Correction, I was in the wrong row.  It's correct.
Here's a site that shows decals but not 1983.

Skeg notched at 90 degree angles for strength before welding on new section $100; lower unit repainted and clearcoated $130.

Yeah, damage was from the river incident. Prop pretty much destroyed, (1 blade almost torn off)
I'm not sure what I'm doing to tell the truth. I simply   cant afford the repairs on the metric this winter but I'm not ready to let her go. I'm considering selling the tower and using the money to buy the cv16 here http://www.fundealer.com/console/watermark_large.php?src=36201
which has a 125 hp and is in decent shape for $600... I am just pissed at myself though, I just paid $700 for new controls, cables, and prop on the metric and I have no doubt I will cause more harm to the metric by trying to repair the damage to the hull myself.

If I doll up the cvx16 over the winter, I will have a good boat for spring which I could flip to pay a pro to repair the metric. I don't even want to get started on the Owens Flagship restore project and the Larson Senza I just 'stole' for $150 (no motor/good trailer)...

ahhh well, I'm really grateful to you guys and your guidance.. maybe tomorrow I'll be smarter and luckier, right?

I don't know, checking it out in the morning. interior supposedly 'fair', no rot or transom issues. Well known local dealer with good reputation. I'll be posting pix and engine/compression info tomorrow.

The CVX16 for $599 is to cheap ...
It most likely has a piece of plywood over a soft floor, a metal plate over a soft transom, painted hull to cover repairs, fishing boat seats, etc. etc.   You might have to drill new holes for your Merc. , not sure what was on it to start with but it wasn't the Force, it looks to new.

The CVX from Fargo is an I/O and would have a cut out for the out drive in transom, if your thinking about using the hull.

Could you mount the Merc on the Larson for next summer ?

I'm guessing that any boat repair shop would look at your C500 and estimate repair thinking that they would have to pull floor out to do a good job on hull.
After talking with shop to make sure that is the case, you could pull the floor out and bring the hull to them.

I'm no expert on fiber glassing or hull repair BUT it sure looks like you would have to do it from the inside to do it right ...
A guess on floor install costs would be $500 to $800 depending on what you used for wood, resin, etc.
Guess is based on my transom/rear stringer/rear floor repair which cost me about $450 ... give or take $100 ... LOL

Yea that IO needs a 302 V8 like Kert's rebuild.  I think he's aproaching 60 mph.  Pretty sure the CVX has a different hull.  Definate angle up front while the C-500 is pointed.  You can measure the width at that point.  Only way to replace is make a new hull with the original mold.  Probably made in Texas.  I think our buddy Wiliermdb had pics of a bunch of red C-500s in Austin in a boat junk yard.  That right?  Think they were all red and whiite.

See what it would cost if you stripped the hull down and brought it in. Should knock the price down s good bit.
