Sounds like the same issue Doarn was having with his CVZ. Could be the accelerator pump in the carb or a fuel pump.

Just talked to Ben ..
He put boat in water this morning, motor will rev up and run good out of gear ... But when he put it in gear and take it for a spin it will only rev to 2000 rpm's and will die after about 15 to 20 seconds, if he back off throttle before it die's it will keep running. It will starts back up easily after it die's. Will run at half throttle with out dying.
He has new gas in tank, new fuel filter, carb isn't all gummed up.
Maybe fuel pump ?
Any ideas ?

He's on the way back from the lake and will add to post shortly ...

Sounds like the bowl is emptying out of gas possibly?  (I'm not a carb expert!)

OK ..
Not much of a car/marine motor guy ...
I know an outboard fuel pump can be rebuilt, can a I/O pump be rebuilt or do you just get a new one ?
Remember reading some of you guys went to elect. fuel pumps.

Looking at online repair manual for " accelerator pump " rebuild/repair/parts involved ...

Thanks guys ...

Engine sounds good Ben, but I thought I heard a little knocking in the beginning of the video. Oh, may be that is just visions of Phoenix tormenting me in my head. :P

Man that hurts just looking at it!  Hope Sara is okay.  You've got to take extra good care of them when they get hurt doing something you love to do Ben, it's an unwritten rule.   ;)

Ouch! Hopefully for Sarah it's just a sprain and nothing is torn.

Sounds to me like you have a fuel problem.  It ran on the muffs for a couple of minutes because there was no load on the engine so it was drawing less fuel.

My experience with mechanical fuel pumps is either they work or they don't. So I don't think that is your issue. But I could be wrong. You could always pull the tube at the fuel pump that runs to the  carb off and see if it is spitting out gas while it is running. That will tell you if the fuel pump is good or not.

Did you pull the gas line filter at the carb and check that? Next I would make sure the gas line from the fuel tank to the fuel pump is free/clean.

The online manuals are very hard to read (print is so small) but says to do what Kip said to see if pump is put out gas.
Guess it could be putting out some but not enough, guess you just have to make a judgment call on amount.

What year is boat/motor ?

Gregg I should have been more clear. There should be some tubing that runs from the fuel pump to the carb. If the diaphragm starts leaking on the fuel pump it dumps the gas back into the motor versus it collecting in the bilge.

While it is running I would check to see if there is fuel coming out of that line(tubing), which would indicate a bad fuel pump. But the first thing I would check is the filter at the carb.

Found a Mercrusier manual in PDF for a 1998 - 99, 120 HP. Motors
Did a little reading, but not sure if a early 70's carb are the same as a late 90's carb.

If any one would like a copy, it only about 6 megs so could be emailed.
Think it has info & spec's on Alpha drive too ...

You have to blow through it harder than I think you should... I was discussing with one of the guys at work about my issue and they told me it could possibly be a vapor lock

"  could possibly be a vapor lock "

In you or the boat ?

Have you priced out T & T line ?
Can you have one made with the right fittings for cheaper ?
Think you should replace both ?

How's my Baby doing ?
