Nice!
« on: August 20, 2015, 10:07:16 PM »
This must be one of those experimental one-piece pushrod-rocker assemblies!

Hopefully this was just caused by loose rockers.... I know they were clackin a bit... just didn't take the time out to snub em up

Gonna toss a new rocker in it this weekend or next. Outside a loose rocker adjustment, I'm not really sure what else would/could cause this...

Lack of lubrication can cause this, the friction in the cup is fairly intense given the pressure versus surface area.  Look at the oil puddled in the rocker cup on the other valve.  Check the pushrod for blockage.  When you reassemble, use some rocker clips and let it idle to visually insure adequate oil flow.  The fulcrum point also needs oil too.

Yeah, it had oil in it when I had adjusted them prior. No signs of excessive wear or heat as far as I could tell - but I guess I couldn't rule it out

No blockage in the rod - that was the first thing I checked

Could a bad lifter cause it?

It could be the lifter, but it appearantly pumps up or it would not have punched through the rocker.  Monitor the oil coming through the pushrod while idling, the rocker clips keep the oil from going all over.  I've used aluminum foil before in a pinch.

Why does the rocker nut on that rocker look so goofy? Upside down?

Replacement stud for a press in stud?   Youre right, something doesn't look right, I wonder now if he doesn't have some other issue, pulled guide? bent valve, spring or seat issue?   Pressurize the cylinder and pull the spring, something is wrong.

The nut on that stud is different. Nothing else really stood out. I noticed that when I had it apart before.

When I had the head off I didn't notice any issues either. (about 3 hours run time ago, the valves all seemed seated fine)

The valve seems to move just fine, but I'll check it out..... If there are any other noticeable issues, maybe I'll put this other head on it.
Otherwise, I'll put the new rocker on, adjust them all with it running so I can see everything.

Is it frowned upon to adjust them when running? Manual said do it with it off.... I'd rather have, and would rather this time, do it with it running

I would definitely check lift at the valve for any binding.   Except for the oil mess issue, I see no reason why you can not adjust the valves while running, used to do that with all engines, except air cooled VW's, but certainly with hydraulics.

Right on.... I moved the valve manually with the rocker off.... pushing the valve down with a socket/extension/ratchet, and aside from the spring tension, it moved smoothly

Should I still pop the spring? I suppose if I do I should put #1 at TDC so it can't fall too far lol

Thanks for the input guys :)

Air, fuel line, cord, piston at TDC, whatever it takes to keep the valve from dropping in.   Seems like that cylinder may have had some issues before, so I'm curious to see what ya find.

Well, broke the clip that holds the lifter together.

The valve moves freely. The study is the same as all the others, so I'm not sure why the notice different but I don't think that's an issue. Stud is in there solid.

Ran back home and grab a couple lifters out of the spare engine and I'm on my way back to put it back together.

Can't think of a reason why the clip woulda broke other than maybe slop in adjustment so things were sloppy, or just a random thing.

Just going to button her back up. I think I'll be good to go

She' alive. And she sounds great.

Not gonna run her much right now though. Gonna get a carb kit and do that and a fresh rocker adjustment next weekend and should be set ;)

I hope. Lol
