Round Back Seats Late 70's Glastron Carlson
« on: January 03, 2017, 02:19:00 PM »
I am making new seats for my 23. It originally had the round back seats and I will be doing the same. Last time I made them for my 18 I bought a sheet of bendable plywood, that has a type of rubber core, to make the seat back.

Anyway is anyone else going to be building a seat any time soon that is in the MN area? I am going to be buying another sheet of the plywood 40.00 and was wondering if anyone would be interested in the other half. Otherwise I may just see if they will sell me a half sheet.

Below are a couple pics of the 18 Seats I will be building the exact same ones.
I think this has become an addiction.

Was that a G/C designed seat ?
Or your own design ?
I remember your orange CVX interior looked SWEET ... THE whole boat looked SWEET !

I'm wondering if we/I could add it to the seat thread in vendor & resources section.
Dave said he has some rot on his seat bottoms, not sure there same style/design though.

Yes this was the original seat design. I copied the old ones. Tim also made them for his Intimidator.
I think this has become an addiction.

OK ... remember Tim's seats ...
I'll dig around in your old CVX18 thread, and see if you went into more detail on seat rebuild, unless you have them saved ...
Is it OK if I add them to seat thread ?

Did you have the old vinyl for patterns also ?

I don't think I really went into detail. I can when I build these ones. No I do not have the old vinyl patterns.

Go ahead and add it.
I think this has become an addiction.

"  I can when I build these ones. "

That would be great !

" No I do not have the old vinyl patterns. "

I was wondering if you had the vinyl patterns for the upholsterer to copy OR he just made them using seat frames ?
Like you just handed him frames and said cover them ...

I think at the time I may have had the old vinyl to give him for some of it. This time however he will have to start from scratch. I don't have the vinyl for the seats and I threw away all the seat stuff already for the 23 because, One it didn't have a back seat in it when I got it and I new Tim had made a set of patterns for the front seats when he made his seats.

Jeff had all his old wood for a patter for the rear seat although I am going to be changing it up some.
I think this has become an addiction.

OK ...
You can post your build here, and I'll copy it over ... Or start it in the seat thread.

Got started on the Front seats last night Should probably finish them up tonight.

Picture
1 you will need to cut out 4 of these
2 Take 2 of the cut out and then cut them like shown
3&4 After cutting out the center (this will make the pad for you to sit on) you will need to trim back the edges so there is a gap between the horse shoe piece and the seat pad. There has to be enough room for the vinyl on the seat back and the vinyl on the seat pad.
I think this has become an addiction.

1 you will need to cut 2 of these. It is made from Bendy Plywood. I used 3/8. I bought it from a local cabinet shop. They had it in stock. You will need a half sheet 4'x4' to make 2 seats
2 You can see it bends pretty easy.
3 I put a layer of glass in-between the seat Bottom and the horseshoe reinforcement. The reinforcement is for extra support for the seat back when it is installed. I had extra resin so I put a coat on the hole piece. Before I add the seat back I will sand down all the edges so there is no sharp edges and make sure they are all rounded so the vinyl won't wear threw as fast.
I think this has become an addiction.

I got the seats done last night

Picture
1& 2. The front edges are ground down so they are not sharp. I also smoothed the whole outside edge of the boards so they are flush. I then put a layer of glass and resin between the base and back before screwing the round back on to the base.

3 & 4 The back installed and screwed. It is best to have 2 people when screwing the back on. Find the center point on both pieces and mark it( you can see it in pic 3). Then start in the middle in the back and work toward the front on both sides. I used a lot of screws but started with a few with washers so they would pull threw when there was only a couple. Last I added a couple strips of glass for support and then thinned the leftover resin and brushed a coat on the entire seat to help protect it from water.  I will also drill a couple drain hole in the seat base and make sure to put resin over the wood after I drill the holes.
I think this has become an addiction.
