Saved! 73 cv-16
« on: May 25, 2017, 07:22:57 PM »
Saved another one from the landfill.. 73 cv-16 in red. Still would like to know how this 73 came with red flake that wasn't an option untill 76... But who cares! It turned out nice. All new wood, saved the original red flake. The dash I got off eBay fell an the floor and broke.. So I just made one and also a visor for it and it looks good to me.. And yes I used the cheep seats.. But what the hay.. I was able to rebuild this whole boat for under $2500 and although a lot of us dump a lot of cash into these things, it is possible to make one look good on a budget.

No, that's the original gel. I sanded it smooth but the flake overtook the red so I added some red tint to the clear and sprayed the top half. The bottom I wet sanded and then buffed out. It now sparkles like a ruby.  And that's what I'll call her.   This one I'll keep and use until I get the mini jet done.

WOW !  That came out GREAT !

I like the dash, the visor was a good idea. Covers the molded area where dash cover riveted on ...  Is it just a piece of plastic ?
Maybe some Burl wood vinyl on the surface, were gauges are ... That would look cool !
Flake shines like NEW !   Red CV's look cool ...

Yep ... Seats are wrong, but guy that did my seats said it would have cost $1500 to do them, and you would have had to build frames also ... If new owner wants them he can build them.
That Jetson light doesn't belong on that year boat, I have the correct light pole for that year boat, and can take your Jetson light off your hands ... LOL

Are you absolutely sure that's a 3 on the end of your serial number, and not a 6 ?
Did your bow fuel tank/wood platform look like this ?

The sides of the deck are higher also up front tank on the later models.  Plus a plastic dash. What year did they change them Gregg?  Beautiful boat.  Good buying price?

I was wondering the same thing.   The '73 has a plastic/rubber strip at the bottom of the windshield.   This one appears to have an extruded aluminum strip.   What did you use for your clear coat spray?

Yes, 73 check it out on picture. I used one piece of plexi for the dash visor, made a pegboard pattern cut it out and then use a heat gun to do the angle on the ends. Turned out nice and very easy to do, I used the same vinyl on the dash as the rail around the interior and curtain for back. And yes just like that for gas tank. And then a panel to hide it. The only thing I can think to explain the 73 having everything a 76 has is it must have been a mock up for those years. And the jetson light is staying right where it is... That was one of the reasons I got the hole boat..and it was red..

The only things on your CV that is 1973 are the serial number and the Jetson stern light !
Everything else is 1976, or post 1974 parts/style ...

Was there any vinyl left on pad above splash well ?
1976 was the only year to have plain vinyl on pad, all other years had pleated vinyl.

" And the jetson light is staying right where it is..."
Thought that would be your answer ... LOL

Your CV looks GREAT ... and that's the most important thing !

The model change was 74 according to images.  So was it a early 74 built in in 73?  Same question I asked on the Brian Bergstrom boat but he read it 76.  It was 77.

" So was it a early 74 built in in 73 ? "

Guess it could be ...
1974 should have the "Box" horn on deck, Jetson stern light, pleated vinyl seats and pleated vinyl plash well pad, in MF green or MF plum.
1976 should have had "quilted pattern" seat inserts, no deck horn and plain vinyl splash well pad, in MF blue/blue or MF red.

The stuff needed to tell year is/was missing ...

Here is a couple pictures of when I got it, and what it came with. Everything looked 74-5 with the jetson stern light and red flake. It had fancy pin striping all over so I think it was loved for a long time before it ended up like this.

Steering wheel is 1972 to 1975 version.
Deck decal (round disk) is 1971 to 1973 version.
No holes in deck for "Box" horn.
Can't tell if splash well pad is pleated or plain.
Bow fuel tanks were 1974 to 1976.
Who knows ?
Looks nice and that's what matters !

No horn box on my '74, or any holes in that area.

Nice. One of my favorite colors on a CV 16. Seems to be fairly rare.

Your right Roy ...
Picture's of 1974 thru 1976 CV16's (outboards) in brochures don't have horn box on deck.
Most other models do ...

When it come's time to sell it you can honestly list it as a rare 1973 CV16 !

Could very well be a left over hull that they experimented on with that red flake for the first time. ??
