Q about Mercruiser 140 Wiring Harness Multipin Connector
« on: July 28, 2017, 02:17:58 PM »
Does anyone sell the boat side connector? (preferably with the crimp/solder pins.)

The CVX16SS I got doesn't have the connector on the boat side. Motor I have does.

I'm gonna wire it up off the boat side for now, but later I'd like to use a connector if it's available.

That of I guess I'm in the market for a connector or harness.

I have some harnesses, you could get one of them and but splice it on or replace the whole harness

Any connector that would have crimp or solder on pins as you suggest would probably hold moisture and fail.   The originals are potted for several good reasons.   Joe has the better idea, find a good used one and do a proper solder and tape job to seal it all up and it should be good as new.   Whole harness would be good as well, but much more labor intensive.   I haven't looked, but a splice in end may be available new, but likely cost a bit more.

Even with crimp pins, I still solder.... I always prefer cups :)

If I splice, it'll be soldered and shrunk.

I would honestly rather replace a whole harness than to splice in any way though.

What about this?

https://greatlakesskipper.com/mercury-18-inch-8-pin-boat-engine-wiring-harness

8 to 9 pin adapter. I have 8 pin at the transom, and 9 pin at the engine.
$30. Looks like maybe the easy and acceptable ticket?

What's the 9th pin vs the 8 pin?
(I returned my buddy's manual a while back and need to order one)

I had found one somewhere for my 71. I believe it was the motor side, as it was rotten. Couldn't solder anything, nor did I have wire of the correct size and colors.

Well, looks like it's gonna work. I'll have that 9th circuit separate, once I look and see what it is... lol... but.... anyway...

This way I don't have to swap the harness, and I don't have to chop anything up and solder it.

As an explanation of my idea of what's funny.... I love the fact that the single most expensive thing I bought in order to get this running was $35 and I only did it cause I don't wanna splice the wiring... either cause I'm lazy or also cause that would suck....

It's a challenge now to see if she's a runner/swimmer at $600 in. If for nothing other than my own amusement.

I must be getting old. lol. whippersnapperishly old.
