Post by: fireman24mn on August 27, 2013, 04:10:01 PM
Just wondering what everyone's plans are for the weekend. We are going out in the boat somewhere.

Plans?    Ideas?

I will be at the cabin all weekend...
unfortunately i will be spending more time on the roof than in the water as this is the progress as of this morning and still need to do the other side.

yea... its the "Family" cabin, and it is a year around home converted from original cabin by P.O.
it belonged to Laurie's Great Grandma when she was a kid, so its back in the family now.
i would normally invite all you guys to come up, drive in circles, and drink...
but if you were to show this weekend you would get put on the roof.

What time are you thinking Shawn?
Joni has to work and if I can get the boat in the water once before Sat with no problems, I'd like to get out and would prefer a lake to a river until I know its reliable.

The lake will be pretty busy so I will prob head to the launch between 10-11 otherwise there is no truck parking spots left. Then may park the boat at my access and head out around noon or just stay out depends what is going on and what time I launch.

If you want I could meet you at WBL on Fri for a test run. Not sure how far it is for you to get here. Let me know or give me a call.

Probably further then I want to go for a test run. I'll drop it in a nearby lake before Sat and if all goes well, I'll shoot to be at White Bear (county?) landing on the North Side of the lake at around 10:00
Gregg?
David?
Anyone else?

Kind of waiting for some one to say ... No , let's go to the river !   ...  LOL

WBL is OK ...
Sat. about 10:00 is good ... might get there a little earlier to be sure of a parking spot.

Sounds good to me. If there happens not to be a parking spot I have put the boat in before and just had a friend or my wife drive the truck back to our house. Then walk the 2 blocks down to the lake and jump in the boat at our access. And Yes I will be at the Ramsey county launch all the rest on the lake are no good right now.

Ross let me know if you need me to run somewhere Fri and be back up in my boat for ya.

Fired it up in the shop after adding the new module and oil/fuel pressure switch. Joni's ulcer might be acting up as well as having the flu. If she doesn't feel up to going out tomorrow, I'll probably just head out myself.
Shawn if you're just itching for an excuse to get on the water, I'll be heading to South Center lake. I HOPE I wont be needing a back up boat but of course you'd be welcome to join us or me. Not sure on the timing. Joni has 2 interviews scheduled for tomorrow.

Since I did the Mississppi Hastings run two weekends in a row, I will probably not get the boat out this weekend. Got chores lined up around the house. After the labor day weekend, maybe the St. Croix will have less traffic. Also the Lake Pepin run would be nice late in the boating season.

Would like to make it out, but Saturday is the day to let the little birds fly.

Will be quite around the house maybe more time for boating.

Maybe Sunday or Monday Sue and I will make it out.

We'll be out on the lake a little later, just have a couple things to take care of around the house first.  I'll head over to the sandbar when we're out.

Just got back from White Bear Lake where Gregg graciously tested two Mercury props for me. One tested out perfectly and the other needs to be rehubbed. Thank you Gregg. Gregg also let me drive his boat. The boat looks and drives great. The steering is so smooth and easy to turn. Also out there are Ross and Shawn. Drove Gregg's boat conservatively and hit 50.8 MPH. Sheriff's boat pulled in the parking lot as I was driving out.

We were joking around about what I would have to pay if the prop fell off while testing, because we didn't put the lock tabs down on the prop shaft nut ...
Pulled out of launch and got her up to about 15 mph, felt OK .. so I gave her some gas !
Got up to about 25 - 30 mph and motor revved up like the prop fell off  ... OH CRAP !
Shut motor off and started trimming up ... Praying that the prop was still there ... IT WAS ... Thank you !
Limped back to launch at 10 mph ... Gave her another shot and same thing ... Rev's shot up with no acceleration ...

Didn't do much boating ... But was nice to sit at beach and relax.
Met Shawn's buddy and his family, who have a nice V-173 ... I think ?
Ross's boat seemed to run pretty good, but had some funny noises at full throttle and has a leaky head gasket.
But ran the whole time without dying ...  I think he has one problem solved !
Finally got a ride in a jet boat ... Thanks Ross !
But he wouldn't let me drive it, after what I did to Dave's prop ...

Not many pictures ... To much relaxing, I guess ...

I'm thinking about gettin' a pontoon  ....

So that's not Bambam's?

So that's not Bambam's?

Nope. A friend of Shawns came up from Rochester. Nate, wife, kids, dog.
That 164 he purchased from Don (Retro) Volvo set up.

Part of the reason for the lack of pictures was at least for me, not bringing my phone out of the boat. Some pretty good size waves would roll in and almost knock us out of the chairs we took over. I should have taken some from IN the boat. Oh well. Got pretty sunburned.

Gregg, I'll gladly let you drive it when its running right.

There son's Birthday falls on the Red Wing meet, or they would have been there ...
Forgot to get a picture of Shawn's grill .. Hangs off boat's cleat .. Pretty cool !
Is yours a V-173 Ross ?

Nope, 175

Shawn had that grill set-up at the meet the first year he came....2010
Thankfully someone brought food. Thanks Shawn and Jessica.

Celebrating a b-day at Red Wing sounds ok to me.

Thanks! That sandwich wasn't sitting out in the sun too long, was it? :o
One thing I can say, is I like how it takes waves at any angle or speed.

The prop that Gregg tested with the defective hub was a Hi-Performance 22" pitch 2-blade bronze prop that I bought new on e-bay, but the prop is from the 1970's. Guess rubber weakens with age. Was hoping that it would be a fast prop, as I have never tested it and am saving it for the 1988 115 HP Merc. Just glad that Gregg's Merc did not blow up with the high revs.

Spent Friday evening on the lake until sunset. Then meet Greg, and Ross and my friends from Rochester for some relaxing and sight seeing on the lake on Sat.

And on Sun I went bear hunting and got on at about 7:45 that night. Figured some where between 250-280 LBS.

Thinking bear brats next time we are on the river.

That looks like a pretty good size on Shawn.
We think we have one around here, well I know there are some around here but I mean in the yard. Bird feeders were destroyed about 6 weeks ago so we quit filling them and seeing all kinds of scat that we have not seen before. If its not Bear, I don't know what it is. Certainly not Elvis!

You can get a permit for a nuisance bear so you can shoot it and get rid of it. We just ate the bear brats that I made and they were pretty good.
