Title: Restoring my 76 GT-150
Post by: leoisright on April 06, 2022, 09:28:02 PM
Hello everyone.

First, thanks to all those before me that has posted anything and everything regarding the GT-150 and other models.  I've learned a lot and hope to bring an old girl back to life.

Last fall I stumbled across a 76' Bi-Centennial edition GT-150.  She was in rough shape and didn't know if it even ran.  I'll start uploading pictures as I go.  The plan is to keep it as original as possible.  This will take a few months to finish the interior so please be patient as I upload the progress.

I don't want to mess with the body too much.  I will eventually fill in the gelcoat with period correct gelcoat (I found some of the original colors still available).  if i can't replace like original or darn close.

After a little pressure washing and adding a new emblem on the hood :)

removed the carpet, side panels, and seats.  I'm going to look under the flooring in a few years.  It's solid across, no soft spots, and transom looks great on inside.  I'll worry about that restore at another time.  The engine runs strong so the plan was to get the interior done this year. I have to finish up the carpet and ski locker.

One variation I am doing is making a Walnut ski locker door and Walnut dash panel.  I don't like the stickers.  Also adding GPS/Mapping/Structure scanning equipment (Lowrance HDS 10 w/structure scanning)

Time for the seats to be restored.  Will be new wood/foam/plastic/vinyl with custom pleating to keep it close to the original white w/blue piping and blue pleated stripes.  Unfortunately mine were shot!  This is where the money is being invested this year!  Ouch!!

You can use the bottom of the vinyl that wraps around and gets stapled to back of dash as a gauge to what color the blue was originally, it shouldn't be sun faded as bad as other exposed vinyl.
Try buffing gel with some compound and then wax, to see if shine ( more shine .. LOL ) comes back.
Are cracks in gel around transom / splash well area ?
Title: Re: Restoring my 76 GT-150

We picked out colors last week and used one in another thread for comparison. The vinyl was brittle and really faded.  My understanding it was a blue metallic color used back then and heat pleated material.  I did find some that looked like a match, but it was too expensive to be ordering 10 yards of what they wanted for it.

As far as the spider cracking.  None are around the transom and splash well area.  I was shocked at how solid the floor was.  But, I'm also aware that the stringers are going to be shot.  It was an expense I didn't have in the budget this year.  I semi restored a 72 V-156 then found this boat for $600.  They weren't sure if it ran 100% due to the missing fuel tank and battery.  But she fired right up when I tried.  So I sold the V-156 and decided to restore the seats in this boat and update the side panels.  The panels are going to be pleated as well, just sewn in vs heat.

Most of the spider cracks are on the hood and near the sides.  I'll be wet sanding it down, compound, wax, detail buff.  I'll wax 3 or more times once the shine comes back in the color.  I'm confident the color will shine. I have watched techniques on grinding out the spider cracks, put new gelcoat over it, then wet sand, compound, wax.  If I use the proper gelcoat (which I found the original), it can remain original as possible.

I wish we had the resources to break it down to the stringers and rebuild it.  Unfortunately that isn't in our immediate future.  I did feel it was important to bring her back the best I could without compromising the originality.  I'll save some of the vinyl for future reference.

Welcome to cgoamn.  Looks like your doing a awesome job on your boat! Keep us posted.   See there is a Minnesota registration where are you located?  Remember seeing one like that with the same motor on Crystal lake in Burnsville.

Live in Chaska and surrounded by the lakes :)  I know of another one up in St Cloud area.  This could have been the one you're referring too cause I got it last fall.

Not sure if vinyl was " metallic"  ..  pictures I've saved of what look like original 1976 GT vinyl might be the "blotchy" colors.
Kind of blue with darker blue in color. Weird vinyl in a 1972 V156 pictured ..
As long as your replacing all vinyl, it should look great !

Will you be ready for the Red Wing Event ?

Post by: leoisright on April 07, 2022, 07:24:43 PM
Yeah, all the vinyl will be replaced with a darker blue and slightly off-white.  I had just sold a 72 v156 and using that money to have the seats redone and vinyl.

I'm really hoping to have it ready by June 1st for the water.  I'll ticker through the summer on smaller things, but will continue to bring it back as much as thr bank account allows.

I'll be ordering the original gel-coat here soon so I can have that to work on the body some.  Body is good overall though.

Here's the 72 I finished doing the interior.  Before and after pics.

I stopped by to look over the frames, foam, and hardware.  Smart to use them as templates and build new ones.  Mice nests inside.  Yuck.

I spoke with the upholster and asked he Photo document the build process for the forum.  It may help someone that decides to use the blueprints from the other thread.

If anyone is looking for repairs and lives in MN or WI boarder, this guy is legit.  Will easily beat most prices, and quick turnaround.

He said they should be ready by the first of the month.  Below are the colors chosen.  Hand pleated and piping brought the price up about 15%.

We have a thread going here ..   http://forum.cgoamn.com/index.php?topic=3866.0
You can add his contact info there ..

I thinned down some resin and coated entire base, also put fiberglass around inside of corners.
Last time I looked .. burlwood vinyl was hard to find .. At least the dark stuff used in old Glastron's and Carlsons.

I love that look! I haven't decided how to do the bases yet.  This is certainly and idea.  Then I could cover the ski locker door with it.

Most Glastron's and G/C used dark burlwood vinyl on dash, throttle board, seat bases, ski locker door, etc.
Maciej has repo's of most stuff for GT's ..   http://forum.cgoamn.com/index.php?topic=6395.0
He's also on many of the Facebook / Glastron groups.

Pleating has begun. Decided on a single pleat to keep the order down.  These are foe the seats and the side panels.  Having 2 sheets that are 8"x132" and planning the boards at 4". .

Met an Upholster from Circle Pines MN.  I was asking him if it's okay to post his contact information and he isn't thrilled with the idea.  lol

He specializes in Hot Rods, Motor cycle seating, restoration projects.  Some marine.  I'll tell you one thing, he's got an eye for detail and I'm hoping he changes his mind and let me add him.

Trim vinyl has been pleated.  Now I need to find the best solution for making the corners.

2x 8" x 150" for the sides with 18" extra on each.  Then the one to cover the piece by the motor.

Thank you!!  My dumb ass must have tossed the old vinyl because it pi$$ed me off trying to remove.  I'll find them once I'm done.  Lol

A couple great ideas on there.  The jar lid may work, a few other materials that may work better.  It's good to see how the gunner rails were designed.  Think mine are still up there.  I'm considering using a piece of flexible plexi or plastic to make the corners a little more smooth.  Goal is to make it look seemless from side to side.

I may knock it out this weekend.

The rear trim went pretty easy with the metal pieces.
I had problems with the corner on the dash.
Tried a few different things and none worked great, still got wrinkles and bunching up on vinyl.

Yes that is a pretty tight corner to get around without wrinkles.

Made a little progress today on the back half trim board.  Used a poly trim board from home depot, pre-drilled holes for the bolts.  Went with wing nuts on the back to make it easier to take on and off.

Used gorilla glue duct tape to form the corners.  Needed to make it flexible for my idea to work right.

Not bad for about 2 hours start to finish.  Includes gluing the vinyl too.

Post by: leoisright on April 16, 2022, 10:21:03 PM
Glued the vinyl on the fronts and then trimmed up the ends.  Tomorrow I'll be stapling it all down.  Ran out of staples.

I'm impressed with how easy it was to form the boards.  Tomorrow I'll also be tackling the front half.

Pleating the material made it easier to keep it aligned all the way down 128" piece.

The corners absolutely suck to get the vinyl to stay in place.  Probably why they stapled it from underneath.

Well, this is done for now.  Both boards are mounted with bolts and wing nuts from the backside so they are very secure.

My buddy did my seats but I told him I would try to do the side panels, he told me to cut "reliefs" in the back side of vinyl so it wouldn't bunch around corners and cut some "V's" in back side of tight corners.
Bad picture .. but you get the idea ..

the pictures help.  thanks!  I'll remove them once i install the seats and try to fix it.  It certainly is easier when all the original boards are on the backside.  I was planning on stapling from under.

The problem with these side rails are not only are there sharp corners on this boat, but they also are at different angles making it damn near impossible to do it with my current knowledge, or tools.

One idea that a friend suggested was using a heat gun to bend the boards to fit the angles better.  I may see if he can fabricate some down the road.

I used "Carpet tape" .. hold great and a lot easier to work with ..
Seats/seat bases and front kick board hold down most of carpet, so I just put tape around dips for chines and rear of boat.

Title: Re: Restoring my 76 GT-150

I used the cheap Home Depot in door / out door carpet, so wanted it to be easy to remove if I got stains, burns, etc.
Also wasn't sure how well it would hold up. I did have a problem and had to remove it, which was pretty easy, only had to scrap tape/carpet off floor under seat bases.

I did notice the pictures I have of three different 1976 GT150's that (Maybe) look original, the wood decal on dash is lighter and has a grain pattern unlike the dark Burlwood of older GT's. Also has vinyl door covering on ski locker and a grab handle on passenger side.

Not sure how "Exact" you want or can get on your rebuild ..

From factory the only switch would be for lights, boats under 16 foot don't need a horn and third switch would be accessory.
What motor are you running ?

Has a johnson 70.  The factory switch still works and connected it to the new LEDs. The one ordered has the ability to add 2 more if needed.

Replaced the controls this morning and getting ready to add the trim over the next week or so.  It won't be 100% original, any changes will be subtle.  I replaced the wood around the controls and ski locker door with natural Walnut with a coat of poly.

Dash, CG Plaque, side grills, and door decals came in!  A week earlier than expected.

Seats should be here soon.  Hoping yo have all the electrical run Friday night, then start cleaning it up.

Having a heck of a time with the trim function to work right.  Can get up, but not down.  About had it.  I may have to create my own relay wiring harness.

Still waiting on the seats.  Stopped by today and looks like they will be finished in the next couple days.

Cleaned up the lower end of the Johnson and painted with the original color then cleaned up the prop.  Looks pretty good.  I'll work on the hood here soon.

Added the front and rear cam with GPS dash cam and installing the Lowrance HDS live tomorrow.

Found an appropriate cooler to sit in the back.  Also added a Boss 6.5 BT speaker tube.

Shooting for a Saturday test run.  Can't wait!!

Really looks great, the OB looks like new.     The seat bases and foam job are probably better than original.    Couple of questions, the foam is cut perfect, is that a dedicated foam cutting tool( black and decker), or standard turkey cutter?   Second question, and for anyone in the group, do you waterproof or protect the new plywood from water? Paint, thinned resin, Thompson's water seal before bonding the foam?    Hoping you have a successful splash day soon.

Boat looks GREAT !
LOL .. My Buddy Paul stolid his Mom's turkey cutter about 40 years ago when he started doing auto interiors and used it for my seats .. Cuts foam great ..

My seat bases and seat bottoms were rotted, also top of driver seat .. Guy that redid vinyl the first time, pull back foam and put a thick piece of plastic between wood and foam, seemed to work so just left it.
I coated the seat bases with thinned down resin, with fiberglass cloth in corners.
I think if you sealed bottom of bases, you should be OK for another 30 years.

Yup.  Turkey cutter and black and decker.  But the cheaper turkkey cutter ones will burn out.  So budget for a couple.

As far as protecting the wood, it's marine plywood and is coated with poly.  These seats will last longer than the original ones!

Patterns are made and cuts have begun!  Decided with piping to tie it all together.

Hey Brandon.  I am.  What's funny is I just put some generic decal over it because it looked so bad.

Please check!  Please :)

I swapped out the switches because they didn't fit in the dash correctly.  But I love the push/pull chrome ones.  Have one for interior lights and other for both stern/bow.  Stupid bulb burnt out in the bow.  Good luck finding those locally.  Ended up buying an after market Attwood one just for the bulb.  The OG is a is different base.

I'm stopping out in Wisconsin in a few weeks to pick up more trim from a 71 gt-150, just didn't have the steering wheel on it.

Seats should go in tomorrow!

Thank you!  Seats are in for now.  Need to remove the bases.  Decided to stain them a dark walnut and poly them.  Match the other wood.  Also going to add walnut trim behind the seatbacks to cover the seat bolts.

 They turned out very nice.
