Title: New member from Minnesota
Post by: 1982CVX16 on November 04, 2018, 02:42:39 PM
Hi.  I'm a new member from Minnesota.  My boat is a 1982 Glastron Carlson CVX16.  I am the original owner, and the boat is all original.  Attached are some photos.  Even though the one photo appears to have a tree growing out of the middle of my boat the tree is really behind the boat.

WOW !
Very Nice !
Oh Ya … Welcome to the forum 1982CVX16 ..

I think the steering wheel is wrong though …
Other then that looks like it rolled out of factory !
1982 CVX16 is not listed in one of there brochures or P.I.G.'s .. But is in another brochure, maybe late 1982 build ?
Would you be willing to share serial number with us ?

No kidding! Beautiful boat! One of the nicest CVX16's I've seen! 1982 was a very interesting year for the CVX16. According to the brochure it's a "SS-CVX-16". Every other year from 77-88 it was a CVX16. Well, apparently the boat didn't even exist in 1981 though. I always wondered if the emblem on the boat changed that year as well but according your boat it did not. Thanks a lot for sharing pictures of your boat and hope to meet you on the water some day. Like Gregg said, if you would be willing to supply us with the HIN that would be very helpful as well.

My 1980 CVX-16 SS had a bow sticker/emblem that indicated the model.  I had always known or believed the SS was due to the IO configuration.  My other cvx-16, outboard, was a deluxe version according to the title.  So the ads left me a bit confused.  Great looking 16, very well preserved.

Might have had some old CVX16SS stickers left from pre 1979 CVX's ?
Dosen't look like the one pictured in brochure has a bow sticker ?
Wondering if his steering wheel is original also ?

Thanks for all the replies and information.  As far as I know the steering wheel is what came with the boat back in 1982.  I've been looking for pictures from back then to verify this.   But I have never had the steering wheel changed.  It has always looked like that.  If you look closely there is "wood" trim in the middle of the steering wheel which matches the "wood" trim around the inside of the boat.

I'm a little reluctant to post the whole serial number but the first three characters are GCV and the last four are M82C.  I have been told that those last four characters indicate a 1982 boat.  Interesting when I went out to get the serial number I discovered that one digit in the original sales receipt and the MN registration had been incorrect since the boat was new, so I called the MN DNR to get that fixed.

The boat has a sticker on the bow with SS, so I will take pictures and add them here, and probably take a few more pictures as well.  Any special requests for pictures?

The boat lives indoors for most of the time, which is why it is in such good shape.  The trailer is up on blocks for the winter.

It usually gets comments whenever I take it out.

If you look at bottom picture I posted above, that is the steering wheel that was used from that time frame.
I'll try to find a better picture of one.
Not saying your wrong or anything, just interesting ..We learn new stuff all the time about G/C boats ..

How to read your "Hull identification number".

EDITED … Your would have been built in October 1981. EDITED
Sorry for the confusion ..

Seem like there are more boats with incorrect SN's or build dates on titles then there are one's that are correct !
As far as we know the number you didn't give is your hulls number, we think .. LOL
Understand not wanting to post it on internet ..

This link is to most of or boats ... "Glastron / Carlson serial numbers"

Your CVX should also have a plate on throttle board, does it look like one pictured below ?
"Glastron/Carlson  ..  Anaheim, California"

Of course we would love to see more pictures of your CVX !

Awesome!

In original condition, and original owner . . . that is a rare thing.  For most of us by the time our machines come to us they have been passed around a bit.  And then members of this group bring them back to life repairing the neglect of others.  Your the rare original owner that cared for the machine and obviously had a lot of pride.

Looks like a great family heirloom you have created in one generation.

Welcome.

Great looking 1982 CVX-16. I wish that I aged that well over the last 37 years.

The M82C suffix on your hull number means that it is a 1982 model year, built in Oct 1981.

True for every year except for 1982!

Here are some photos of the steering wheel.  This is as it came with the boat in May 1982.  I have been looking through my old photos of the boat but haven't found one yet of the steering wheel.  Mostly the photos are of the outside of the boat.

When I look at the 1977 Glastron brochure the GT-150 seems to have a steering wheel which looks similar to my boat's.  But the photo in the brochure is not very clear.

Is there some reason the dealer would have changed out a steering wheel on a new boat?  That seems unlikely to me.

Also, note that the wood grained trim on the steering wheel seems to match the wood grained trim on the dashboard and the interior sides of the boat.

Would there be anyone still at Glastron who would have information about the steering wheel?

And more photos of the boat.

I had originally intended to buy a Crestliner Crusader, but the two Crestliners had been sold at a boat show.  So I looked at two Glastrons.  I think one was blue which I liked but it was not a Glastron Carlson.  I really liked the look of the Glastron Carlson CVX 16, and the metal flake paint was pretty stunning.  So that is what I bought.

I need to scan some old photos of the boat shortly after purchase and post them up here.  A couple of them are of the boat christening ceremony.  Others are of the boat out on the water.

Looking thru brochures, there were models in 1977 to 1980 with that wheel.

Some 1976 to 1977 models had this version.

"Would there be anyone still at Glastron who would have information about the steering wheel?"

Nope .. Were all ya got … LOL

$9500 in 1980 dollars would be $29,000 in 2018 dollars !
Which is about what a new GT180 / Evinrude 115 ETEC go's for ...

Steering wheel looks great.  Even if it was not original I’d keep it, matches perfectly.  It very well could have been changed out at the factory.  In those days they were making so many boats per day with a bunch of models and lengths I’m sure they had multiple part sources for various items.

The boat looks awesome just the way it is, don’t change a thing. And metle flake orange (Apricot) is kind of my thing so the more pictures the better.  😀

Welcome to the CGOAMN. Have you known about our group for very long?  Where in Minnesota do you live?  Yours is the third CVX-16 in the group that I know of, including mine. Your boat has had obvious excellent care over the years as the interior and exterior look brand new.

Very cool. Your boat has 3 separate model names on it. CVX-16 on the dash SS-CVX-16 on the bow, and cvx-16 Deluxe on the capacity plate.

.    Might be that I'm in Nebraska, but I owned two CVX-16's, a 79 deluxe(OB) and an 80 SS 140 merc.

I live out in the western suburbs of the Minneapolis area.  I learned about the group when I went to pick up my boat from winterizing.  As I was getting ready to leave, someone pulled in to the marine shop and came right over to look at and discuss the boat.  He's the one who told me about the group.  He had owned a CVX years ago, but he had sold it to get another boat.  My CVX brought back memories for him.

This past summer one time when I had the boat out on a small local lake there was one other boat on the water.  When I went to take my boat out of the water he immediately also headed over to the boat launch.  He wanted to see my boat up close and discuss it.

I'm still looking for old photos from film cameras of my boat, and will need to scan them so I can post them here.  Maybe scan tonight.

This past June I went to the Wayzata Art Experience where there was a boat show with the Bob Speltz Land-O-Lakes Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society.  I assumed they were only interested in wood boats, but when I showed them photos they said they also welcomed classic old fiberglass boats.  So I plan on taking the boat to the event this coming year, assuming the weather is good.

These photos are from the christening in May 1982.  Yes, I still look exactly the same now as in the photos.  By the way, the boat was christened "Crusader" as that is what I had originally planned to buy, a Crestliner Crusader.  I didn't break the bottle of champagne, we drank it.

The only change I can see in the 36 years is the prop color changes from white to black, and some paint off the skeg - a time capsule boat.

Here are some photos of the CVX-16 on Pelican Lake, south west of Detroit Lakes, where it went on vacation.  These photos are from the early to mid 1980's.

Pelican Lake was sometimes referred to as the Lake Minnetonka of Fargo, as many wealthy people from Fargo had very large "cabins" built there.  Note the "cabin" on the hill (Devil's Slide) in the last photo.

Here are more photos of items from the 1982 time frame.  First is the hand written sale information card which was on the boat at the dealer.  Note that I had the motor upscaled to a 115 Johnson.  Next is the dealer's name on the boat, and finally is the boat after picking it up from the dealer.  The car is a 1970 Chevrolet Nova with a 350 four speed stick shift.  I still have the car as well.

I have the original owner's manual for the boat, motor (and motor installation manual), and trailer.  Also, I have the invoice and paid receipt for everything.  There are probably not a lot of owners who still have those items.

Thanks for finding this.  Yes, it looks the same except that my steering wheel has the wood grain trim finish, which I think looks nice with the rest of the wood grain trim in the boat.

I did a little research on Glastron and found that it has changed ownership a number of times since I bought my boat.  The current 2019 model outboard with the least weight is approximately twice the weight of my boat and motor.  What happened to the little sport boats, the CVX's?
